Raise of hands please: who remembers Voltron: Defender of the Universe on television? Hands down. Who would like to play a Voltron video game for the first time ever? THQ is proud to announce that Voltron is coming to the Xbox LIVE Arcade as well as the PlayStation Network November 29.

Dynotherms connected! Infracells up! Mega thrusters are go! Let’s go, Votron Force!

Realizing that the younger crowd may have been lost on that line, here is the breakdown: Voltron, who protects the planet Arus from the evil forces of King Zarkon, is a giant robot that is formed when five robotic lions come together to make the hulking hero himself. In this downloadable-only game, Voltron fans can relive the moments from the classic series (with clips from the series mixed into the game), or introduce a new generation of young Space Explorers, commanding any of the individual Lions or even team up to form Voltron and wield his epic, blazing sword.

Voltron: Defender of the Universe is a re-mastered experience that combines classic Voltron animation and style with high definition graphics and audio that deliver high-impact, real-time single and multi-player gameplay with up to five players. Players going the multiplayer route may choose to play either online in seamless 1- to 5-player co-op or offline in 1- or 2-player co-op. They will select a Lion based on a number of strengths, resistances and elemental attacks that they use to battle fierce Robeasts and a number of other adversaries familiar to fans of the original television series.

Each Lion will have its own strengths and weaknesses, and players can take advantage of the unique weaponry and gameplay styles (tanking ability, swiftness, ranged attacks, etc.) on each mechanical feline. Strategic planning will be necessary as one Lion may not be the best unit to tackle all obstacles. In co-op mode, each player must control the individual Lions’ weaponry and work together to wield Voltron’s sword.

Voltron was one of my childhood favorites, along with He-Man and Thundercats. I was the talk between the boys in first grade because I got the Series 1 Voltron for Christmas in 1985. It’s somewhat incredible to think that Voltron has been away for nearly 25 years, and that this is the first real video game for the franchise (I’m not counting the mobile version released for various phones 2 years ago). This author is skeptical by nature, but I’ll probably be one of the 30-something-year-olds that’ll be downloading it for nostalgia sake.

Any Voltron fans out there? What are your thoughts on the classic 80’s hero finally getting a video game? Does this sound interesting? Any other 80’s classics you’d like to see remade into games?

Voltron: Defender of the Universe will be released November 29, 2011 for Xbox LIVE Arcade and the PlayStation Network.
