Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars has been a game fans have known of for some time, but has received little information. Thankfully, Square Enix has released a new trailer for the game, announcing its release date and now-available demo.

As one of gaming's defining role-playing developers, with some of the industry's most hallowed franchises in Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, Square Enix launching a new IP is a big deal. At the end of 2020, Square Enix trademarked Voice of Cards, which then did not offer a lot of information, just speculation as to what sort of project it could be. It would not be until several months later when Voice of Cards leaked on PSN, showing the full title, and a pieces of artwork. The leak gave a bit more context as to what Voice of Cards could be, but it would not be until this trailer that fans would officially know what the game is about.

During the latest Nintendo Direct, Square Enix officially revealed Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars, announcing a demo and the game's release date. Aesthetically, Voice of Cards looks like a game that's never been seen before, because as the trailer indicates, its world is made entirely out of cards. Whether its traversing on the overworld, through cards covered in trees, or being swept into conflict, which take place on a fitting, tabletop-RPG table, it is a game that appears to be fully committed to representing itself through cards. It brings to mind games like Paper Mario, whose role-playing gameplay is often directly intertwined with its paper-aesthetics.

The trailer briefly teases Voice of Cards' story with varying glimposes at gameplay. Once was a peaceful land has been turned into one of conflict as a dragon has awakened, requiring courageous heroes to step up to vanquish it. A haunting vocal melody reminiscent of Nier Replicant's soundtrack plays over the entirety of the trailer, which makes sense as the creator of that series, Yoko Taro, is the Creative Director on Voice of Cards. The end of the trailer reveals that a demo is available now on the Nintendo eShop and PSN, with a Steam demo available later today.

While the card-aesthetic of this game may be offputting to some, this doesn't appear to be like any ordinary card game. It is being marketed as a new RPG that is told through "the medium of cards," which as the trailer shows, is attempting to do something totally different with what people think card-based, and even tabletop RPGs can be. There will likely be deck-building mechanics, but as opposed to some games that are solely about battling other players, Voice of Cards looks like it is trying to tell a pretty solid story—and with Yoko Taro involved, there is surely to be some sort of meta, fourth-wall breaking in there too.

Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars launches October 28 on Nintendo Switch, PS4, and Steam.
