Video game villains can appear for a brief moment, yet the games wouldn't be the same without them. Often more intriguing than the heroes they face, an independent video game for each of these characters makes sense. In some films, the bad guy wins. Could the same happen in video games?

The following villains might appear as a final boss, but they each cause problems for the hero. A standalone game branches away from the main series and might include a character's origin story. With plenty of untapped potentials, these are ten villains that deserve a standalone video game.

10 Boo

Before we dismiss this one as ludicrous, know that there was once going to be a spin-off game featuring this unlikely villain. The canceled project was named "Haunt," and we could only imagine what it could have been.

The game was planned to be released for the Nintendo DS and was going to feature many Boos. Haunt, falling under the horror genre, could have been one of Nintendo's greats. This antagonist deserves a standalone game.

9 Doctor "Eggman" Robotnik

Doctor "Eggman" Robotnik is notorious for being a recurring villain in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. With an IQ of around 300, he is an intellectually sound character, even if he is bad to the bone. In-person, he is one of the least formidable foes, which is why he attacks with his creations.

In comparison to other gaming villains, relatively little is known about Doctor "Eggman" Robotnik. Perhaps a standalone video game is in order so that we can gain insight into this diabolical genius.

8 Dark Samus

Dark Samus

Samus Aran's darker doppelganger has become an overarching figure in the Metroid Prime series. Since his first cameo appearance in Metroid Prime, his roles have slowly become more prominent in the games. Dark Samus is the final boss in Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, and he is the main antagonist of Metroid Prime 3: Corruption.

This Phazon being mimics the form of Samus Aran. Her mysterious nature makes us want to learn more about this character in a standalone video game.

7 Dracula

The Castlevania Netflix series proves that there is much interest in Dracula. He is loosely based on Vlad the Impaler, a Romanian emperor who lived during the 14th century.

We've already seen games that let you play as Dracula, such as Castlevania: Lords Of Shadow 2. However, it's been quite some time, and we haven't seen a triple-A standalone game with 'Dracula' in the title. The idea of a Dracula standalone video game is rousing.

6 GLaDOS

Having an artificially intelligent computer system guide you through an entire game only to realize it's the villain of the game is disheartening. You grow attached to this computer system, which is why Portal plays with your emotions in the best way possible.

As one of the video games' most iconic villains, a standalone video game is needed. It could be a puzzle-platforming game played from the perspective of GLaDOS.

5 Mewtwo

Over the years, we've seen several films based on the Pokémon Mewtwo. One might wonder what makes this Pokémon more fascinating than any other. Well, Mewtwo has a backstory filled with betrayal and mystery. His origin story has been retold and expanded in movies. It makes sense, now more than ever, to develop a video game based on Mewtwo.

There are now over one-hundred Pokémon video games in circulation. It's shocking that Mewtwo doesn't have a standalone video game.

4 Darth Vader

Darth Vader is the epitome of evil and one of the most influential figures in video games. We've played as Darth Vader in games like Star Wars Battlefront II and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, yet there's only been one video game to headline this character.

The Vader Immortal VR series was a step in the right direction, even if it didn't fare well with critics. Now, we need a full-fledged standalone game to highlight the rise and fall of the most powerful Sith in the galaxy.

3 Bowser

Numerous games let you team up or play as Bowser. It raises the question, why hasn't there been a Bowser standalone video game? He is possibly the most iconic villain in video game history, but he's mostly a static character.

A video game with Bowser as the protagonist could delve deeper into his character, as well as bring original gameplay. The story would be dark and a bold undertaking for Nintendo, but it might work.

2 Arthas (The Lich King)

The World of Warcraft: Shadowlands cinematic trailer reveals that the Lich King will be stripped of his power in the upcoming expansion. He is World of Warcraft's most recognizable villain.

His goal is to raise an undead army, so that he may conquer all of Azeroth. Also known as The Lord of the Scourge, the Dark Lord of the Dead, and the Lord of Terror, the Lich King would be a great candidate for a standalone role-playing game.

1 The Joker

"The only sensible way to live in this world is without rules." The Joker is Batman's archenemy in video games and movies. The Joker movie was a blockbuster success because people are fascinated by a villain, unlike any other. His motives are unclear; he just wants to bring harm to the world.

There is pent up demand for the Joker game. Perhaps the story would be about his insanity and how he struggles to come to grips. Whether it's an origin story or not, it's what the people want and deserve.
