Netflix has officially released the full trailer for its upcoming series Vikings: Valhalla, a spinoff from the renowned History Channel and Amazon Prime series Vikings. The wait, however, won't be prolonged as the newest addition to the franchise will make its long-awaited appearance on Netflix this month.

Netflix's Vikings: Valhalla is an adventure situated a thousand years into the past, taking place more than one hundred years after the events of the Vikings series. The narrative will chronicle the experiences of some of the most famous Vikings ever to live, such as explorer Leif Eriksson, his impulsive sister Freydis Eriksdotter, and Nordic prince Harald Sigurdsson. The tension between the Vikings and English royals will reach a severe boiling point in the series, leading to turbulent war as the three notable Vikings begin an epic journey across the ocean, fighting for survival and honor.

The Vikings: Valhalla trailer opens with Leif Eriksson, played by Sam Corlett, and his Greenland crew at sea wrestling with a vicious storm as they make their way to Kattegat, which was the capital city of Ragnar's kingdom from the Vikings series. The existence of the aggressive English king threatens the entire North, which prompts Eriksson to join the fight against England, alongside Harald Sigurdsson, played by Leo Suter. The trailer quickly introduces several other notable Viking and English characters, each looking to add something unique to the journey. "Witness the rise of the Vikings who will become legends" are the words shown across the screen, juxtaposed with scenes riddled with chaos, bloodshed, and war.

Vikings: Valhalla doesn't appear to be holding back any punches, providing audiences with enough action and violence to go around. The footage supplied for the eight-episode first season establishes early expectations within audiences, which will hopefully exceed projected marks once more context surfaces in the story. Jeb Stuart serves as showrunner and creator of the series, known for his iconic work with Die Hard and The Fugitive. Stuart's professional background promises a high level of intensity from the series, which comes across aggressively in the trailer. The action feature writer looks to keep the story moving, shying away from drawn-out moments to tap into the English and Vikings' strain fully.

Additionally, Stuart thought it was important for Vikings: Valhalla to not have any connection to the original Vikings series to provide space for the narrative to grow and mature on its own. Michael Hirst, the renowned creator of Vikings, will serve as an executive producer on the spinoff series and clarified that the only returning element from his original story would be nostalgia. Familiar names and locations will greet audiences familiar with Hirst's series, but Stuart disclosed that watching the original is unnecessary to dive into the spinoff. The nostalgic elements from Hirst's time won't alienate newcomers, but they will satisfy audiences across the spectrum.

Vikings: Valhalla has a talented cast and looks to make a significant impact once it hits the streaming platform. The final trailer has ignited a spark of anticipation within audiences eager to see what more may linger behind the series doors. While Vikings: Valhalla is new, attachments to the original series will be challenging to escape from, primarily because of its success for six seasons. The path appears bright for the spinoff, but only time will tell if the reception is enough to justify the addition of future seasons.

Vikings: Valhalla will make landfall on Netflix on February 25, 2022.
