Vikings: Valhalla, the sequel to the hit series, Vikings, is set to arrive on Netflix. Like Vikings, the new series will introduce some of the most notorious Vikings legends to a new audience. Some share a history with a few Vikings characters, while others will be introducing their own legacies.

The upcoming Netflix series has already been ordered for at least three seasons. Given that a century has elapsed between Vikings and the start of Vikings: Valhalla, it will be interesting to see how the series will honor the history some of these characters bring with them. Vikings' final season already began to alter the history that some Vikings: Valhalla characters were destined to bring with them.

Vikings centered around the legacy of notorious Viking, Ragnar Lothbrok, and his family. The series focused on Ragnar's rise to fame alongside Lagertha, Aslaug, and Floki before his children, Bjorn, Ubbe, Hvitserk, Sigurd, and Ivar became the focus of the series. Vikings: Valhalla will deal with an entirely different realm of notorious figures who will come equipped with their own impressive, gory adventures.

Sam Corlett as Leif Erikson

Leif is described as a man "from a tightly-knit family steeped in the old pagan beliefs." He is one of Vikings: Valhalla's leading men who will introduce viewers to the tense political and religious state of the world. Of his accomplishments, Leif's often associated with discovering Vinland (an area believed to rest along the coast of North America). In Vikings' final season, Ubbe appeared to have discovered the area first. Leif is also the son of Erik Thorvaldsson, otherwise known as Erik the Red. A character based on Erik was briefly met in Vikings before he suffered death at the hands of his former slaves.

Frida Gustavsson as Freydís Eiríksdóttir

Freydís is the daughter of Erik the Red and sister of Leif. She is described as "a staunch believer in the 'old gods.'" Both Freydís and Leif will arrive in Kattegat as outcasts, but will quickly earn the respect of those around them with similar beliefs. Historically, Freydís is as notorious as her brother and father, who is capable of her own forms of brutality. In Saga of the Greenlanders, Freydís kills two Icelanders with whom she has frequent disagreements, along with the men and women who reside in their camp. Given Erik's death and own treacherous actions in Vikings, it will be interesting to see how Vikings: Valhalla's showrunners explain the history of Freydís and Leif.

Leo Suter as Harald Sigurdsson

Harald is "one of the last Viking berserkers" who has the ability to unite Pagans and Christians. He served as King of Norway from 1046 until his death in 1066 at the Battle of Stamford Bridge. In 1030, Harald fought alongside his older half-brother, Olaf to regain the Norwegian throne from Canute. Harald was exiled to Kiev and fought in many battles before returning to Scandinavia where he would become King of Norway.

Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson as Olaf Haraldsson

Olaf is said to have assisted Aethelred II in regaining the English throne. Olaf served as the King of Norway from 1015 until 1028 when he was driven into exile in Kiev. He gained the throne of Norway following the death of King Sweyn Forkbeard, Canute’s father. Olaf would lose the throne and eventually his life to Canute, who would succeed his leadership in Norway. Olaf was slain in the Battle of Stiklestad where he fought alongside his younger brother, Harald, to try and restore his leadership in Norway. After his death, Olaf became known as Saint Olaf, a figure often admired in Normandy.

Bradley Freegard as King Canute

Canute is described as a “wise, savvy, and ruthless Viking leader" who "keeps his friends close and his enemies closer.” Canute becomes the King of England, Denmark, and Norway over the course of his life until his death in 1035. His ambitions ruffle the feathers of several of his Vikings: Valhalla costars, who all have less than pleasant interactions with him.

Caroline Henderson as Jarl Haakon

Jarl Haakon will be the ruler of the familiar setting of Kattegat in Vikings: Valhalla. While Haakon is Pagan, she is said to welcome those of any belief system to Kattegat. Haakon “will become a powerful mentor to Freydis, who is drawn to her wisdom” following her arrival in Kattegat. Historically, Haakon is often associated with Canute’s leadership in Norway and Denmark.

Pollyanna McIntosh as Queen Ælfgifu of Denmark

Ælfgifu is the first wife of Canute. The two were married amidst Sweyn’s invasion of England before his death. Together she and Canute had two children: Svein Knutsson and Harold Harefoot. She would reign as Regent in Norway with her eldest son, Svein, beginning in 1030. Norwegians opposed their rule and eventually rebelled against them, driving them out of Norway.

Laura Berlin as Emma of Normandy

Emma of Normandy is the great-granddaughter of Rollo, who was previously met in Vikings. Emma is considered ambitious and described as “politically astute, and one of the wealthiest women in Europe.” Emma marries Aethelred II and becomes a stepmother to Prince Edmund. After Aethelred’s death in 1016, Emma weds Canute in 1017, where she eventually reigns as Queen of England, Denmark, and Norway.

Bosco Hogan as Aethelred II

Aethelred reigned as the King of England from 978 to 1013, where he was invaded by the Danish King Sweyn Forkbeard. Aethelred took residency in Normandy until Sweyn death in 1014, which allowed him to return to England and combat against the rising support of Sweyn’s son, Canute. Aethelred would serve as the King of England for a second time until his death in 1016.

Louis Davison as Prince Edmund

Edmund, often known as Edmund Ironside, only served as the King of England for a few short months between the death of his father, Aethelred II, and the defeat Edmund suffered at the hands of King Canute. Canute would take control of England, allowing Edmund to preside over Wessex. Shortly after this agreement, Edmund died.

David Oakes as Earl Godwin

Godwin is described as “the ultimate survivor,” who is known for serving under King Canute and his successors. Godwin became a powerful figure through his affiliation with Canute and the political landscape that Godwin was capable of bending to his desires. Godwin will be a huge piece of Vikings: Valhalla because of his deceitful actions and the connections that those actions will have on fellow Valhalla characters, including Emma of Normandy.

John Kavanagh as The Seer

Kavanagh is currently the only member of the original Vikings cast that will make an appearance in the sequel. Kavanagh had a recurring role in the original series over the course of its six seasons as The Seer, which he will reprise in the sequel. The Seer often provided counsel to the various members of the Lothbrok family, revealing frustratingly vague but promising bits of their fate to them.

The first season of Vikings: Valhalla will debut on Netflix on February 25, 2022.
