When sequels are made to beloved games, fans are generally excited, because those games can further the series and make the story more expansive. Some franchises have two entries that tie together all the story points neatly. However, in the world of gaming, a one of the biggest factors in getting that second or third entry made is the success of the game that came before.

When the first two games in a series are a massive success, it makes sense for developers to make a third entry to round out a trilogy. However, that's not the case for all games. It can hurt when players have invested time and effort in two games only to find out a third one isn't coming out, and it hurts more when a game ends on a cliffhanger. All these things can leave players disheartened because of the feeling that the story can never be completed.

5 Portal

One of the most interesting games to come out Valve, the Portal series showcased some very interesting puzzles and level designs. Despite its massive success, though, Portal 2 has never gotten a follow-up. Being one of the best games to play with friends on split-screen, gamers could spend countless hours exploring the weird world of Portal 2.

Portal 2's strange storyline goes in the opposite direction of what players expected, which has made the game an iconic one that fans can call back to over and over again. With the influence Portal 2 had on gamers when it first came out, a sequel would have been a great idea, and it still is. Fans and even the game's makers themselves are asking for a third one to this day.

4 Half-Life

Like Portal, this franchise has had players begging for a third installment for a long time. Every now and again, a rumor comes out regarding the development of a third Half-Life game. These rumors alone break the internet with fans speculating how it'll look in VR, or what the story will be, and for good reason. Half-Life 2 has a strong hold on the video game world due to how impactful it was not just on PC, but also also on consoles.

While many players are still hoping for a third game to come out, it sadly seems like Half-Life 3 is unlikely to happen, at least for now. Players have been confused for many years as to why a third Half-Life won't come out because both games were massively successful and influential.

3 Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

star wars the force unleashed star killer facing darth vadar

One of the more unique Star Wars games to date puts players in the shoes of Star Killer, an apprentice training under Darth Vader who has to learn the dark ways of the force. This story was a great way for players to explore that side of the lore. While Star Wars: The Force Unleashed flew under the radar for many fans, it still held its own for those who played both games. These titles featured great gameplay moments and were rather difficult, making for a high-risk, high-reward gaming style which many players enjoyed.

Although games like Jedi Fallen Order have made being a Jedi cooler again, The Force Unleashed was the opposite of being a Jedi. Players could become incredibly powerful and do a lot of destruction, which gives them a lot of freedom. However, many players assumed the series would finish up with a third entry because Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2 ended on something of a cliffhanger. Players still want to see how Star Killer's journey ended.

2 Mirror's Edge

This unique first-person free-running game had it all from, a one-of-a-kind art visual design to some of the best movement mechanics in gaming. However, fans had to wait eight years between both Mirror's Edge games. When Mirror's Edge Catalyst was first teased by EA, fans were overjoyed because the wait they had to endure was about to pay off. Now players could visit Faith again, this time in an open world where she tried to figure out her place.

Having a dedicated and niche fan base, the series could have closed with a third entry, allowing players to fully realize Faith and her story. She had become iconic in her own right, and for players to hold on for nearly a decade between the first two games showed their dedication to the games and the character. However, because of the niche audience, Mirror's Edge 3 sadly won't happen any time soon. However, as time goes on, maybe EA will revisit the series one day.

1 Original Battlefront

When EA announced they were making Battlefront, many fans speculated if it was going to be the third game in the series. This would have made sense, due to the fact that both Battlefront and Battlefront 2 were critical and commercial successes, and fans wanted remasters of those two games. However, what fans got instead was a full-fledged reboot of the series which somewhat stayed true to the original version, but with better graphics and bigger modes.

But this still wasn't enough. The original Battlefront games have a better way of showcasing these massive fights with all the fan favorites, and it's all without the paywall that newer Battlefront games have implemented. While EA has said they're not going to make another Battlefront game, players shouldn't lose hope. Even though EA has said no, another developer may come in and swoop in and create Battlefront 3 with the spirit of the older games, the ones that the fans liked much more.
