RPGs have been around almost longer than video games. Developers have constantly taken influence from the pen and paper tabletop games of yore for their virtual titles. One aspect of the genre which remains a constant is currency. Whether it be to buy upgrades for stats, gear, or items, one always has to manage money.

Because these take place in fantasy worlds, rarely is the currency dollars or some other form of money from around the world. At times, the name for money can seem quite ridiculous. None of the silly names for currency ruin any of the ten games mentioned below, however.

10 Gold– Various Games

Gold is the common go to currency for most RPGs. While Gold certainly has value and was at times used as real currency, it does not make sense for most games. What unit is the gold measured in? Saying one has fifty gold does not mean anything. Is it fifty kilograms, pounds, or coins? Additionally, gold is extremely heavy, making it hard to believe the heroes are carrying around so much.

9 Gil– Final Fantasy

Gil is not only a name, but the universal currency in every Final Fantasy game. While each entry in the franchise is a unique story, they all carry common themes like items, animals, and the form of money they use. Some games feature different kingdoms and warring factions. Typically, different governments use different forms of money, making it interesting to see they all use Gil.

8 Bottle Caps– Fallout

Fallout 76 Mod Support Still Coming

Players find plenty of pre-war money in the Fallout games, but it means nothing with the current state of the world. Why did everyone in the wasteland settle on Nuka-Cola bottle caps as the universal currency among everyone? All groups from the Brotherhood of Steel to ruthless slavers use these. In reality, a barter system of directly trading goods would be more likely in a post-apocalypse.

7 Supplies– Ghost Of Tsushima

While not as pure of an RPG as most of the other games on the list, Ghost of Tsushima includes a relatively deep progression system and currency for players to collect either through finding it in the world or selling other resources.

Funnily enough, this money is simply called Supplies. What kind of supplies they are is a complete mystery to players. Walk up to a blacksmith in real life and tell them you have five-hundred supplies and see what that nets.

6 Potch– Suikoden

Suikoden is receiving some new time in the spotlight thanks to the Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes kickstarter, a spiritual successor to the old JRPG series. As great as this is, just what in the world is Potch? It sounds more like a medical condition than something used to purchase goods and services.

5 Animal Crossing– Bells

Animal Crossing has been enthralling gamers with its cutesy aesthetic since the start of the millennium. The main goal of the game is to pay off one's debt to Tom Nook, but they are free to disregard this and simply live in the town. Apparently, Bells do not gain interest. Speaking of Bells, are players literally giving people the noisy instrument as money? It seems hard to carry around, but at least it makes sneakily stealing money almost impossible.

4 Goth– Tactics Ogre

Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together is one of the darkest turn-based strategy RPGs ever made, especially when considering the generation in which it was initially released. This is no thanks to the name of the money, Goth, which no doubt elicits chuckles each time the name is read. Instead of a medieval fantasy setting, one thinks about the Cure or Bauhaus.

3 Zenny– Capcom Games

Capcom has a huge number of iconic franchises under its belt, from Mega Man to Resident Evil and Monster Hunter. What the first and third games mentioned have in common, along with numerous other titles from the publisher, is their currency.

For some reason, they all utilize Zenny as their money. Whether this confirms all these games somehow taking place in the same universe has yet to be shown.

2 Pokémon Dollar

Some franchises feel the need to add their brand onto real world concepts to make it feel more unique. They could just as well have called the money dollars, but Gamefreak decided to call it Pokémon Dollars. Does the name make the world feel more unique? Would people feel taken out of the world if money had been called dollars or whatever region's respective currency? It feels weird when everything in the franchise's world revolved around these creatures, even the money.

1 Munny– Kingdom Hearts

So many things make no sense about Munny in Kingdom HeartsIt is silly to name the currency something so generic and then slightly change the spelling. Additionally, why does every world accept Munny? It makes even less sense in the first game, since the boundaries between worlds only just broke down after the debut entry's introduction. To be fair, it is far from the most nonsensical facet of Kingdom Heart's story and lore.
