Now that Mindy Kaling's Velma has officially debuted on HBO Max, there are questions about how long the show will last. The animated offshoot of Scooby-Doo, which doesn't have Scooby-Doo in it, has been met with some blowback, but it looks like HBO Max is still willing to support Velma with at least one more season.

While it's not a done deal and hasn't been announced by HBO Max, it appears there is evidence that Kaling's Velma has been renewed for season 2. Kaling's Velma TV series only debuted on January 12, 2023, with two episodes as of this writing.

That evidence comes from the Entertainment Identifier Registry (EIDR) and its listing of Velma season 2. It's hard to know exactly how much to trust the EIDR listings considering there are only two episodes of Velma season 1 listed in the same registry. The entries for season 2 are quite a bit more plentiful, as the database lists the entire season and then breaks down each episode. There are also at least a couple of apparent duplicate entries.

Some could assume that what is listed as season 2 is the continuation of season 1, but that doesn't appear to be the case, as there are also listings for season 2, episode 1, and episode 2. Still, those are already covered by the entries for season 1, episode 1. In other words, at the moment, it isn't easy to know just how definitive or official the listing from EIDR is.

One reason why HBO Max might be holding off on announcing the renewal of Velma is that, at the moment, it's been met with quite a large backlash on the internet. At the moment, the show is not getting anywhere near the love even the live-action adaptation of Scooby-Doo got back in the day. The adult animated series has been review bombed on different sites, but all the reviews are not based on simply tearing down the series because people object to the new version of Velma's character.

Some reviews have been more honest and thorough about the reviewers who don't think Velma can be grouped with the best versions of the popular character. At the same time, the show has just gotten off the ground, and the HBO Max series may find its footing as more episodes are released. Whether Velma can gain more popularity and whether it receives an official season 2 renewal are still open questions.
