If you’re anything like me, you love a game that gets a good special edition. Maybe you like a nice hardcover art book, or perhaps an extra disc full of free unlockables and downloads is more your speed. However, more often than not, the holy grail of great limited edition pack-ins is an action figure. Statues, maquettes, toys; call them what you want, because they are awesome all the same.
So finding out that the upcoming, limited edition release of Platinum Games’ Vanquish, available for both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, comes with a 7” action figure of one-man acrobatic arsenal and main character Sam Gideon would be a welcome bit of news, right? If you said yes, just hold on. I’m going to let you down gently.
The good news is that it is indeed true that fans who purchase the limited edition of Resident Evil /Shadows of the Damned creator Shinji Mikami’s new futuristic sci-fi shoot-out will be getting a Sam Gideon doll…err…action figure (shown below). The bad news is that only fans residing in the UK will get the chance to make that purchase in the first place. Currently billed as a UK exclusive, and with no plans announced yet to expand the release to North America, this might be a limited edition that is actually limited.
It does seem a bit odd though for the limited edition to be a UK exclusive when you consider the fact that Platinum Games, creators of critical hits MadWorld and Bayonetta, is based out of Osaka, Japan. So, no apparent UK ties there. Additionally, as GameRant’s own impressions of the demo pointed out, the game features highly westernized sensibilities and plenty of flavor that screams “America.” Why any developer or publisher would leave out such a large market segment for their product is a bit baffling.
All you Ranting collectors out there, stand up and be heard! Does it irritate you when games get region specific special editions? Do you think you’re too old to be playing with toys anyway? It’s certainly possible that an announcement for a North American limited edition is forthcoming, and you will know as soon as we do.
On October 19, 2010, players on the wrong side of the pond will have to be content to just play Vanquish on the Xbox 360 or PS3, and stare longingly at the empty space on the shelf where a plastic Sam Gideon should be standing.
