Half-Life: Alyx is one of the most highly anticipated releases of early 2020. But there's just one issue, which is that Half-Life: Alyx is exclusive to virtual reality headsets and relatively few PC gamers have one. Valve's doing what it can to change that, offering its own Valve Index VR headset for sale. Limited stock, however, has prevented many wannabe Half-Life: Alyx players from picking up a headset yet, but that may change soon.

Soon after Half-Life: Alyx's announcement, the existing stock Valve Index headsets sold out. This was in part due to Valve guaranteeing a copy of Half-Life: Alyx for free with every Valve Index. Many potential new VR enthusiasts have been waiting for the Valve Index to restock rather than pick up a competitors' headset, but details on availability have been thin. As of Wednesday, March 4, that's changed. Valve has confirmed that the Valve Index will be back in stock starting Monday, March 9, at 10:00 am PT.

Potential buyers should know that the Valve Index is almost certain to sell out very quickly once it goes live. It could be available for hours, or even just minutes. With excitement for Half-Life: Alyx growing since the Valve Index went out of stock, there are likely more people wanting the VR headset than during the window the headset first sold out. Prospective buyers should be online, looking at the Valve Index profile in Steam, and refreshing their browser well before 10:00 am if they want a chance to buy it.

Note that this may be the last opportunity to buy the Valve Index and receive it prior to Half-Life: Alyx's launch on March 23. The VR headset may or may not come back into stock prior to March 23, but would be unlikely to arrive quickly. Otherwise, the headset is certain to come back into stock month-to-month throughout the rest of 2020.

The Valve Index headset costs a hefty $999 upfront. It includes the VR headset itself, tow Valve Index controllers, and two Base Stations required for free movement. The package will also include a copy of Half-Life: Alyx, which will be added to the buyer's Steam library on the day the game launches. Each component can usually be bought separately, but due to the shortage Valve has stopped selling them until the main bundle is back and fully in-stock. The estimated delivery time is 4-8 days from the order.

For those looking for an alternative to the Valve Index, Half-Life: Alyx will also support the HTC Vive, the Oculus Rift, and Windows Mixed Reality headsets.

Half-Life: Alyx releases March 23 and is exclusive to PC.
