Valve working on a Defence of the Ancients Game?

In a recent post on Twitter, Jon St. John, who is the voice actor for Duke Nukem, claims that Valve is working on a Defense of the Ancients (DotA) game. One of his recent tweets reads:

“Had a great time in Seattle last week recording for DotA. The guys at Valve Software are awesome!”

DotA is a game mod that came out late in Warcraft 3: Reign of Chaos’ life that featured two opposing teams of heroes battling it out in an effort to destroy the enemy’s Ancient, one of which is located in each team’s base. Warcraft 3 in its current version, The Frozen Throne, continues to support the mod with new characters, skills and items. The guide to victory in DotA is to level up, buy appropriate items, and build your hero for maximum destruction.

Heroes of Newerth (HoN) was also a remake of DotA, produced by S2 Games, the developers of the original mod. Heroes of Newerth's format is exactly the same as DotA, just updated: altered heroes, skills and items, easier to play, and more user friendly. Think of it this way: HoN is to DotA as StarCraft 2 is to StarCraft. You can check out HoN at the game's official website.

We can only expect excellent work from Valve who, as Jon St. John hinted, may be casting primarily high profile voice actors for their heroes. Given Valve's high standard for quality, this game may turn out to be the future of the real time strategy genre. All we can do for now, though, is speculate. Valve's game could end up being an exact remake of DotA (as with HoN), an entirely new game based on DotA's themes, or something completely different.

It could be some time before we find out what form the game ultimately takes. Valve has not released any official information on the project, or announced a date that the project will be revealed to the public.  Stay tuned for updates.

Ranters, what do you think Valve's take on DotA would be like? Is this a genre you'd like to see Valve pursue?
