Valorant's Brimstone used to be one of the most played agents in the game. He's currently one of only three characters sitting in the controller category. The others are Viper and Omen, and back during Valorant's early beta days, Brimstone's easy learning curve and Orbital Strike Ultimate put him above them. However, over time, Brimstone's playtime plummeted because he received nerfs and because Valorant players realized Omen did what he does better.

That said, some feel that the new "Omen meta" only replaces the "Sage meta" that ended when Valorant's developer, Riot Games, nerfed the character. As such, Brimstone fans would like to see him return to the competitive circuit to give Omen a run for his money and add more character variety. One of these fans made their voice heard over on Reddit when they created a subreddit stating Riot Games needed to buff Brimstone, and the developer subsequently responded.

Speaking on behalf of Riot Games, a Valorant developer with the Reddit username "Altombre" agreed that Brimstone needed buffs. Not only that, but they confirmed that Brimstone would be receiving these buffs sometime very soon. Altombre didn't provide any details on what these buffs would be or when they would go into effect, but educated guesses can be made, at least for when. Valorant's Episode 2 arrives in less than two weeks on January 16, so that seems like a good time.

As for what the buffs will be, the fan Altombre responded to, who goes by the Reddit username "abzoluut," made a small list of what they believe would make Brimstone viable again in their post. It's unlikely Riot Games will implement the exact changes abzolutt suggested, but the list did focus on Brimstone's smoke abilities, and it's what Altombre responded to. Thus, at the very least, Valorant's upcoming Episode 2 update should refine Brimstone's smoke abilities, along with whatever else it has in mind.

All in all, buffs are always good news, especially for underplayed characters such as Brimstone. The recently leaked Agent 14 doesn't play the same role as Brimstone either, so his only competition will be with Omen. With that in mind, maybe Viper will receive some love in the new update as well. She is, after all, the only other controller character currently available in the game. If Brimstone is receiving buffs to help with character balance, she should, too, especially since she's never held the spotlight before.
