In Valheim, players can build magnificent castles and massive towns for their Viking avatars. This has lead some very creative gamers to build some impressive structures in Valheim, from the Millennium Falcon to Stormwind Harbor from WoW. But in order to get the right aesthetic, players need to collect a lot of materials, and some of those might include some Rancid Remains trophies.

Rancid Remains

Rancid Remains look a lot like regular skeletons in Valheim. They are usually a little bigger, carry a mace, and have an eerie green glow around them. These slightly more difficult skeleton look-a-likes are immune to poison, can poisons players, and are strong against both piercing and frost damage. They are weak to blunt damage from maces, hammers, and clubs, and they drop a needed Valheim material called Bone Fragments. But the most important part of the Rancid Remains is their skulls; each Rancid Remains killed has about a 10% chance to drop a trophy which is a glowing, green skull that makes for an excellent decoration in any homestead.

In order to farm Rancid Remains either for their bones or their skulls, players will have to find them first. There are only two places that these guys are likely to spawn: at home and in the Black Forest.

Yellow Mushrooms Valheim

Rancid Remains in the Black Forest

Rancid Remains have a pretty low spawn rate in Valheim. However, it's not impossible to find them in the Black Forest. Players will need to look for Burial Chambers; these small, unground caves are filled with the bodies of the dead. And those bodies do have a habit of getting back up and walking around in the world of Valheim. Thankfully, these dangerous mini dungeons are worth delving; players can find Surtling Cores, bone fragments, farm for feathers to make all the Valheim arrows, treasure, and yellow mushrooms.

They can also spawn in the Meadows on very rare occasions, but not often enough to farm them there.

Rancid Remains at Home

Another place players can find Rancid Remains is right at their front doors. After certain bosses have been killed and certain events have occurred in the game, Valheim will trigger enemy attack events against a player's home while they are in residence. One of the many events that can trigger is called a Skeleton Surprise, and bases will be surrounded by skeletons and usually at least one Rancid Remains.

This particular event can only happen after a player has killed the Valheim boss Bonemass. The chances of one of these events triggering during any given time is pretty good; however, since there are several different types of these attacks, players can't really rely on them for Rancid Remains farming.

Valheim is currently in Early Access for PC.
