There are four different types of wood in ValheimWood, Fine Wood, Core Wood, and Ancient Bark. Core wood is found in areas throughout the Black Forest, and is used primarily as a building material early in the game. Survivors will want to acquire a decent amount of the wood to craft Log Beams and Log Poles. These building materials are perfect to use for walls and supports when constructing a home.

Early in the game, Core Wood is the most feasible material available to create structurally sound buildings. Sharp stakes can also be created with Core Wood to deter enemies near a player's campsite. This guide will cover the best location to farm Core Wood in the Black Forest, as well as a few tips to help players while farming.

And You Have My Axe

Depending on what level gamers are in their progression, they will have different options to upgrade their axe. The Stone Axe will do the trick, but it does less damage per swing. The Black Metal Axe is currently the best Axe in the game and provides 60 chop damage each time the axe attack connects, which is more than two times that of the Stone Axe.

Each of the axes can be upgraded to provide up to 9 additional chop damage. Gamers will save a lot of time by crafting the upgraded Black Metal Axe. The Black Metal Scraps used to forge the axe are found in the Plains Biome, which is one of the more dangerous areas on the map.

Best Locations To Farm Core Wood

Gamers will want to head to the Black Forest Biome and inspect the map to see where the densest areas of the forest are. Core wood is harvested from any of the large pine trees in the biome, so any of the heavily wooded areas will work. These areas should have more than enough trees for players to get all of the Core Wood they need.

Bringing a cart is optional, but it will allow players to carry a lot more Core Wood when farming. Likewise, the Megingjord Belt is helpful, as it increases carry weight by 150. The belt is purchased from Haldor in the Black Forest biome. Players should keep an eye out for the trader while farming for the wood in that area. If gamers are close, his exact location is revealed on the map, represented by a bag icon.

Farming Basics

Survivors will need to chop down the trees and then inflict more damage to break them into Core Wood. It is generally a good idea to know how much Core Wood is needed before heading out to farm for efficiency purposes. While chopping down trees, it is important to remember that the tree will fall in the direction a player is swinging their axe.

Advanced Farming Techniques

Gamers can chop down trees in the direction of other trees to knock them down as well. By swinging the axe in the direction of another tree or trees, players will be able to take down multiple pines at once. While all of these trees are on the ground, many will be in close proximity to one another.

If players swing their axe between two different trees that are close together on the ground, they can damage more than one tree at once. Combining these two tactics will speed up the farming process exponentially.

Using Trolls To Knock Down Trees

It is possible to receive a fair amount of wood without even swinging an axe. Players will need to look for a Troll in the Black Forest Biome and kite the Troll near any kind of tree. Trolls will usually knock down a tree with one attack and they will break apart the fallen trees with a second swing. The Troll method is effective, but it can be dangerous. Gamers will want to have decent armor and a bow just in case they need to kill the Troll. Most survivors will probably want to just use the axe because doing so will level up the Woodcutting Skill explained below.

Woodcutting Skill

As players cut down more trees, they will level up woodcutting. Each swing of the axe that connects will grant players experience. Leveling up the skill will increase the damage dealt with an axe, making cutting down trees easier. Survivors that can get the Black Metal Axe and upgrade their Woodcutting will be far more efficient when farming all types of wood.

Swinging the axe does have a stamina cost that will slow players down slightly. Thankfully, there are mods available to eliminate the stamina cost for swinging an axe. Players that are comfortable with mods will save a lot of time if stamina is not a consideration.
