Valheim players have been immersed in the beautiful Viking themed world since it first shot onto the scene, but one player has decided to take its natural beauty and amplify to unthinkable levels. Willybach is a talented modder and avid fan of the game, and the latest version of his HD Valheim mod sees 8K textures added into the game when used at the highest settings. This High Quality version of the mod includes some 8K assets, a few 2K assets, and quite a bit of 4K assets that seamlessly get swapped with the original textures. This transforms the world of Valheim into something else entirely.

With the recent release of next generation consoles, everyday people have probably heard the term 4K thrown around a lot more lately. This essentially refers to the subject's resolution. For somewhat complicated reasons, the Full HD 1080p that players are familiar with can also be called 2K. Double the resolution and that's where 4K comes from, but this Valheim texture pack includes textures that are twice as good as that, or 8K.

Willybach's HD Valheim mod comes in multiple different versions. Players with a top notch PC should definitely get the High Quality version, as this will give them access to these insane 8K textures and the best of what's available for everything else. Taking a step down from there, the Medium Quality version offers 4K variants for a lot of different textures. The Compatibility version is very much like the Medium Quality version but without a grass filter. Finally, the Performance version cuts out a lot of the high end textures in favor of letting computers that aren't as good still run the mod.

All HD Valheim Versions

The chart above showcases exactly what comes in each version. Players will notice that the 8K textures are only for terrain and only with the High Quality version of the mod, but it is still pretty impressive. This mod is still a work in progress however, so there are some things that don't have textures. Certain creatures and animals will still use the default textures of the game as well as the Ocean and Mountain biomes.

Valheim might not have needed a visual overhaul per se, but players that want to look at their creations in a brand new light will love Willybach's hard work. Naturally, the mod is completely free to download, so players with a monitor good enough to show these detailed textures should certainly give it a try.

Valheim is available now on PC.
