Unidentified flying objects, or UFOs, have been a prominent part of popular culture across the world for decades. The terminology used for any aircraft that the local government is unable to accurately identify has often been correlated with aliens and secretive government projects, with many series like J.J. Abrams' Showtime documentary on UFOs looking to de-bunk and dive into the mythos surrounding them. There is plenty of mystery and undisclosed information surrounding UFOs and how these unusual cases are handled, something that the U.S. government is clearly taking seriously.

UFOs have been a part of pop culture mythos for centuries, with the connection to alien lifeforms largely gaining popularity during the years following World War 2. Since the UFO boom in the late 1940s, aliens and UFOs have been commonly seen in movies, television shows, and video games, with massive franchises like Star Trek born from the increased interest in the vastness of outer space. While the existence of these UFOs and their connection to little green men in saucer-shaped ships remains dubious, the US Government recently formed an official task force dedicated to the study and identification of UFOs.

The U.S. Government recently announced the formation of the Airborne Object Identification and Management Synchronization Group, AOIMSG for short, as an official government-run agency devoted to UFOs. The release statement expressed the group's intent to "synchronize efforts across the U.S. government" towards detecting and identifying unidentified flying objects. The AOIMSG will be designed to identify and assess any potential threat posed by the UFOs to national security, as well as addressing challenges with identifying the objects near official training grounds.

The U.S. Government has taken a noted interest in UFOs and outer space over the last two years. In late 2019, the U.S. Government officially established the 'Space Force', also referred to as Guardians, as a space-focused branch of the United States military. The Space Force serves as a successor to the U.S. Air Force's previously established space program, with the program often working alongside the U.S. government's other space-focused branch, NASA, in the study of outer space.

Much like the explosion of alien-themed movies in the years following the UFO boom of the 1940's and 50's, aliens and UFOs have often been featured in video games. Franchises like Destroy All Humans! poke fun at the mythos around the original concept of aliens, while many space-spanning franchises like Halo, Metroid, and Starcraft can all be tied back to the pop culture obsession with aliens. While the idea of a UFO Task Force may sound like a ridiculous pop culture concept at first, the organization will look to finally shed some light at those mysterious objects in the skies.
