Ken Akamatsu's UQ Holder! manga is coming to an end, the mangaka announced on his official Twitter this past Saturday. The final chapter will be released in the January issue of Kodansha's Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine on February 9.
Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine had announced in May that the manga series would be ending in nine chapters. In December Akamatsu announced that he would be running for the House of Councilors as a member of the Liberal Democratic Party this coming summer. The veteran mangaka plans to run on an anti-censorship platform to protect freedom of expression.
UQ Holder! is a sequel to Akamatsu's previous series; Negima! Magister Negi Magi. The series is set decades after the original, following the exploits of the protagonist's grandson, Tōta Konoe. The manga was launched in Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine, where it ran from 2013-2016. It moved to Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine in October 2016 after a brief hiatus. The series has amassed 27 collected volumes throughout its run so far.
A 3-episode OVA series from J.C. Staff ran During the Fall 2017 season. The OVA was followed by an anime series under the name, UQ Holder! Magister Negi Magi! 2. J.C. Staff returned to animate the series, as did director Youhei Suzuki (Toradora!, Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? On the Side: Sword Oratoria).
Negima! Magister Negi Magi ran in Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine from 2003-2012. The popular fantasy/harem series amassed 38 collected volumes throughout its run, and inspired several OVA series, a spin-off manga, live-action television drama, an anime film, and two 26-episode anime adaptations produced by Xebec and Studio Shaft, respectively.
The first anime adaptation aired in 2005, with Nagisa Miyazaki (Fruits Basket) and Nobuyoshi Habara directing. Shaft animated the various OVA series' the anime film, and the 2006 retelling, with Akiyuki Shinbo (March Comes In Like A Lion, Monogatari Series) serving as director.
Kodansha publishes both Negima! and UQ Holder! in English. The UQ Holder! anime adaptation can be streamed on Prime Video and HIDIVE.
