Three years ago, Supermassive Games released Until Dawn, a horror title inspired by the suspenseful "cabin in the woods" setting. Now, the team behind one of the best narrative adventures from 2015 has a new lineup of games that take the same approach, with the first game set to launch next year.

The first game, titled The Man of Medan, was revealed today during the Gamescom opening ceremony in Cologne, Germany.  The Man of Medan's reveal trailer shows a group of four friends setting out on what appears to be a deep sea treasure hunt, and follows the same formula Until Dawn presented in that no character in the game is safe from death. The game begins what Supermassive is calling The Dark Pictures Anthology, with more entries coming in the future with their own standalone casts of characters. There's no information yet on the games Supermassive plans to release for the anthology following The Man of Medan.

One notable difference in the anthology plans from Supermassive is the absence of any console exclusivity. Until Dawn launched in August 2015 exclusively on PlayStation 4, as the game was published by Sony. The upcoming anthology will be published by Bandai Namco and will see The Man of Medan releasing across PC, PS4, and Xbox One. This is the first game in over five years that Supermassive Games has released on anything other than a PlayStation system. In recent years, they've released two spin-off games from the Until Dawn property for PlayStation VR, Until Dawn: Rush of Blood and The Inpatient, as well as Hidden Agenda, which is supported by Sony's multiplayer-focused PlayLink feature.

It appears as though Supermassive's deal with Sony may be over, given their last game, The Inpatient, released earlier this year for PS VR. Until Dawn received a strong reception from most when it launched back in 2015, and was nominated for numerous awards in innovation, horror, and narrative achievement.

Seeing Supermassive go multiplatform with their new anthology series means they'll be able to reach a wider audience than they could in the past, as they've never released any of their games on a Microsoft home console.

The Man of Medan will launch in 2019 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
