A strange e-mail sent to Destructoid suggests that Sony's surprise hit horror game for the PlayStation 4, Until Dawn, is receiving an on-rails shooter VR expansion.

It appears as though Sony's critically acclaimed horror game Until Dawn may play host to a DLC expansion, called Rush of BloodUntil Dawn receiving DLC is not that hard to believe, but what Rush of Blood purportedly is may leave fans of the game scratching their heads.

Apparently, Sony has started market testing for Rush of Blood in the UK, resulting in the leak of what the DLC entails. Take this rumor with a huge grain of salt, but Rush of Blood is said to be an on-rails first-person shooter that utilizes Sony's upcoming virtual reality headset for the PS4, PlayStation VR.

This rumor came about thanks to an e-mail sent to Destructoid, which they claim was then verified through a second source. The full e-mail can be read right here:

"Well you get transported around inside a mine cart; it's very literally an on-rails experience. There are a few scattered jumpscares, as you'd expect, but I played the same 20 minute section twice (once with DS4, once with dual Move controllers), so I'm hoping the full DLC is a lot more padded out. I didn't see which character I was playing as, I'm not sure if it's specified, but no names were mentioned at all.

It starts off shooting targets in the snow, then moves toward a house and as you get deeper into the house, enemies start appearing (I believe they were Wendigos). The frequently reused jumpscare is the 'ghost' from inside the house in Until Dawn, who you end up fighting for the final area I played. Upon killing the ghost, the game would crash every time."

Considering the sales success of Until Dawn, it's not all that surprising that Sony would look into producing DLC for it, but what's described in the e-mail is a drastic departure from the core game. Until Dawn is an adventure game that heavily relies on player choice to alter the events of the story, not an on-rails shooter. Besides the setting and enemies, Rush of Blood sounds nothing like what gamers would expect from an Until Dawn expansion.

There have been talks of Until Dawn 2 being different from the first game, but we assumed that meant future Until Dawn content would explore different characters, settings, and thematic genres. It would be very strange for the franchise to completely abandon its established gameplay mechanics in favor of being an on-rails VR shooter as described in the e-mail, so hopefully Rush of Blood is just a side project that doesn't indicate what future Until Dawn experiences will be like as well.

It's likely that if Rush of Blood does materialize, it will be a standalone expansion or a spinoff of Until Dawn to give PlayStation VR another exclusive in its lineup. In the meantime, the core Until Dawn experience could lend itself well to virtual reality, so here's hoping that Sony explores a more traditional Until Dawn VR game in the future.

Until Dawn is currently available as a PlayStation 4 exclusive title. As of now, the Rush of Blood expansion is nothing more than a rumor.
