Imagine that back in in the early 1900s, instead of finding vacant planets and an empty galaxy, we discovered that the iconic “Planet X” was really inhabited. Now those inhabitants are a little more than hostile and want to clear a path towards Earth, wiping out whatever stands between themselves and their final destination.

Lucky for the human race, this never actually happened, yet the folks over at Futuremark Games have announced that players will have the chance to defend their livelihoods in the upcoming Unstoppable Gorg. Heading to the PC, Xbox Live Arcade, and iPad, Unstoppable Gorg is a new look at turret defense, combining classic 40s and 50s propaganda, and the ability to use gravity to reposition your defenses.

The basics are simple: Gorg’s army is descending from Planet X, stopping at each of Earth’s colonies — Jupiter, Mars, Saturn… you get the idea — before landing at Earth and conquering. Your job is to launch satellites into orbit around the planets to defend against onslaught. The trick is, players will be able to move and maneuver turrets around, using the planet’s gravity to give them (and Earth) an edge.

“With Unstoppable Gorg we have been inspired by classic sci-fi films to create a game of flying saucers, rubbery aliens, dodgy effects and earnest heroes. Unstoppable Gorg builds on the core tower defense mechanics that fans love while shattering the genre’s conventions to provide exciting new experiences.”

So says Jaakko Haapasalo, identified in the game’s press release as Director of Defense at Futuremark Games. The future of the past, as it were, seems to be the visual design of the moment, with games such as BioShock: Infinite and X-Com adopting elements of the style. As you’ve seen, though, they don’t look quite like Unstoppable Gorg.

As a game, Unstoppable Gorg sounds like an interesting turn on an old phrase, and one that could be a whole lot of fun (especially if Futuremark can add a little bit of humor into the gameplay, as well). With a release window aimed towards this Fall, it won’t be long before we see some of the Gorg’s invading hoard in action.

Will you be keeping an eye out for Unstoppable Gorg?

Unstoppable Gorg is set to release on the Xbox 360, PC, and iPad in October of 2011.
