Resident Evil is a horror series whose lore has stumped players for decades now. On the surface it can appear pretty straightforward, but all is not what it seems. Like Resident Evil VII, this latest game leaves a lot on the table in terms of unanswered questions. Presumably, as with previous titles, Capcom may release some DLC to explore these riddles.

For the time being, though, players are left with unanswered questions about Resident Evil Village. Some may be answered with DLC, but other pressing mysteries may not. Spoilers will appear ahead, so finish the game before reading on to make sense of it all.

10 How Does Lycanthropy Work?

During the game, Elena’s father Leonardo gets bitten in the village. He later transforms into an uncontrollable Lycan, implying that everyone who gets bit or scratched will also presumably turn.

Ethan almost gets an entire hand eaten off by a Lycan; however, nothing happens to him. Is the Mold protecting him from this mutation? Did those healing salves save him? Or was there just more to Leonardo's transformation that players simply aren’t aware of?

9 No Language Barriers

In Resident Evil 4, which Village is largely based off of, the villagers and most others in the region speak Spanish. Even the characters who do speak English at least have an accent, as befits the setting

However, that is not the case in this game. It takes place somewhere in Europe, but nobody speaks with an accent of any kind. Not even Miranda has one. This could have just been a stylistic choice to avoid a language barrier, but it it is odd when compared to Resident Evil 4

8 The Duke

“Who or what are you?” “Even I can’t quite answer that.” This exchange between Ethan and The Duke towards the end of the game raises a lot of questions for players.

Is The Duke being coy, claiming he can’t say anything because his organization is too secret? Maybe he really doesn’t know what he is, and has always existed as if created to be a mechanic for a video game. Whatever the case may be, he is certainly more grounded than his friend The Merchant from Resident Evil 4, whom he also mentions during the game's story.

7 Donna’s Doll House

If fans read up on Donna from diary entries, her powers become a little clearer. She basically puts parasites into her dolls, and can control them like a hive mind. The dolls are being remotely controlled – a bit more believable than the idea of them being alive.

Donna also has a sort of pollen power which can cause hallucinations, which befalls Ethan in her house. If Ethan really was under a spell, though, then the fetus monster shouldn’t have been able to kill him. Perhaps the idea of being eaten alive would be terrifying enough to cause Ethan’s body to have a heart attack – but that theory still doesn't explain everything.

6 Why Did Chris Send The Winters To The Village?

“Ethan, that wasn’t Mia. Grab Rose, and I’ll explain everything on the way.” That’s all it would have taken for Chris to say in order to solve so many problems in the game.

Chris knows Ethan is capable of defending himself from monsters, based on Resident Evil VII’s events. Prolonging the inevitable was one of the core reasons for Ethan's death. On top of that, why did Chris even relocate the Winters in this dangerous territory to begin with? Did he not know about Miranda at all?

5 Where Did Megamycete Come From?

The easy answer to this is "from space". For as many directions as this series has gone, space is one frontier it has avoided. Resident Evil may avoid it completely, considering that another Capcom series that tried it, Dino Crisis, failed miserably.

But if not from space, where could this sentient heart-like organism have come from? Hell? That’s walking into DOOM territory right there. For now, the Megamycete's origins remain a mystery.

4 Why Didn’t Miranda Kill Mia?

Miranda took Mia’s place for an indeterminate amount of time, kidnapping Mia in the process. But why go through this? All that Miranda wanted was Rose.

She could have just as easily killed both Winters and then escaped, with no one being the wiser. Maybe she knew the house was being protected, hence her complex scheme. Still, if Chris was always watching the house, why didn’t he make a move a long time ago?

3 Next Game In California?

Whatever Resident Evil IX is going to be, it is going to feature Rose in some capacity. If not, then Village's ending doesn't make much sense. Rose could turn into another damsel in distress with Chris trying to rescue her, but that's not exactly the most progressive direction.

The star of the next game is debatable, but here is something worth chewing on. The ninth installment may take place in California, a clue that comes from Rose’s. Additionally, Ethan originally was from LA. It would make sense to see him buried there in a family plot, instead of in Texas where he used to live with Mia.

2 Where Does This Game Take Place?

As for exactly where this game takes place, players have a few clues. Fans have determined it could be Romania. This is based on the money in the game, which is called lei, the plural of Romania’s leu currency.

Some words also come from the Romanian language. For example, the Cadou parasite translates to "gift". Transylvania would fit with the game's general theme, since it's home to the classic Dracula stories.

1 Ethan Winters

Ethan is perhaps the most perplexing main character in the series. Firstly, he barely has any reactions to the most bizarre things that he sees in his adventures. He’s not completely silent, but outside of cutscenes, he barely says a word.

Furthermore, what exactly is his body made of, if he is dead but still a Mold person? Shouldn’t he have gone crazy like the Bakers, or shown some sort of wear and tear? There are too many questions left lingering in players minds. Now that he’s dead, they will probably never be answered.
