Unreal Engine 5 unleashes the potential of future PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S games to come. Project M, the latest game from South Korean developer NCSOFT, takes advantage of Unreal Engine 5 with heightened graphical fidelity and game interactivity.

Unreal Engine 5 released on April 5 as the world's most open and advanced real-time 3D creation tool. One of the revolutionary features of Unreal Engine 5 is Nanite, a virtualized micro polygon geometry system. Nanite allows game developers to import highly detailed photographs to create immersive and realistic content. Additionally, Unreal Engine 5 includes Lumen, a brand-new illumination system that immediately reacts to changes in scenes and light sources. Lumen takes charge of light reflections and shadows for a more realistic approach similar to ray tracing.

Project M is a new interactive movie game project in development at NCSOFT. Featuring a variety of stories influenced by choice, the game's various endings are ultimately determined by the player. The latest trailer provides a stunning, near 3-minute look into Project M with actual gameplay running in Unreal Engine 5. In addition, it provides a glimpse into the story of a man seeking vengeance for the death of his lover. With Unreal Engine 5, NCSOFT is able to showcase realistic textures, photorealistic graphics, and enhanced character expressions being utilized in Project M.

Project M is the first step in "NCing," a new open R&D initiative being pursued by NCSOFT. According to Moon Young Choi, Principal Development Management Officer at NCSOFT, the initiative "expresses the company's commitment to unveil the development process and to continue communicating with players down the road regarding new projects." The company plans to share updates in the form of trailers, interviews, webtoons, and novels.

Project M is an ambitious task for the Lineage and Blade & Soul developer. Games such as Project M will ultimately push game development forward with new technologies available in Unreal Engine 5 to developers around the world. The new project also brings a spotlight to the ever-growing game industry in countries such as China and South Korea.

However, it will likely take a number of years before Project M is ready in a fully playable state. Gamers are eager to play the innovative and appealing game, and an early look into Project M in the current state may cause some impatience. NCSOFT appears to be on board with regular development updates to those awaiting its new projects.

Project M is currently in development for consoles.
