Developer Toby Fox became a household name in the video game industry after the release of Undertale in 2015, with Sans becoming a Mii Costume in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Fox developing music for Pokemon Sword and Shield afterward. The first chapter in Undertale's follow-up Deltarune released late 2018, and it seems fans who are waiting for more will be getting an update soon.

The September 10 issue of the Japanese video game magazine Famitsu will be celebrating Undertale's fifth anniversary, and part of that coverage will apparently include an update and screenshots for Deltarune Chapter 2, according to a post by Famitsu today translated by sites like DualShockers. However, it is currently unclear how substantial the update will be, or how heavily it will contribute to the Undertale feature as a whole.

The cover of the upcoming Famitsu issue was drawn by Temmie Chang, according to DualShockers. Her work on Undertale was notably punctuated by a race of monsters in the game called Temmies, and the artist has also gone on to release a small RPG game called Dweller's Empty Path as part of a series.

According to a report by Ars Technica, Undertale had an estimated 3.5 million players on Steam alone in 2018, though the game has also been made available on PS4 and Nintendo Switch. Fox has said that one of his inspirations was the 1997 PlayStation "anti-RPG" Moon that recently released on Nintendo Switch, receiving its first English translation after over 20 years.

The influence of that anti-RPG can be seen in Undertale's structure, as the originally Kickstarter-backed game was billed as being the RPG where nobody has to get hurt. Undertale allowing players to choose their morality on a spectrum from saving to killing every monster, combined with its presentation and excellent writing, helped make the game a quick favorite for many.

Sans appearing as one of the few independent characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is one good indication of Undertale's success, as is the fact that AEW wrestler Kenny Omega dressed like Sans to enter a match in 2019. Deltarune Chapter 1 took many of the elements and characters from Undertale and remixed them into something completely unique, so it will be interesting to see what Fox has in store for the next part of Deltarune based on his announcement in Famitsu.

Deltarune is available now on PC, PS4, and Switch.
