After so many delays and false starts, fans could be forgiven for doubting that the Uncharted movie would ever make it to the big screen. However, the long-in-development and much-anticipated video game adaptation is one step closer to being a reality with the release of the first trailer.

Sony has debuted the first footage of Uncharted starring Tom Holland as Nathan Drake and Mark Wahlberg as Sully. The trailer plays up the buddy action movie dynamic between Holland and Wahlberg as well as showcasing the grand treasure-hunting adventure story. It looks to be heavily influenced by the Indiana Jones movies while also featuring some big action set pieces that look straight out of a Fast & Furious movie.

Based on the massively popular video games from Naughty Dog, the Uncharted movie is a prequel story detailing Drake's introduction into the world of treasure hunting as well as how he came to meet and befriend Sully. The trailer also hints at a plot involving Drake's brother who Sully also knew. The movie also stars Antonio Banderas as the lead villain and is directed by Ruben Fleischer (Venom, Zombieland).

The movie has had a long road to get to this point with various directors signing on to the project only to later drop out and cause the movie to start from scratch once again. Among the directors who have been attached at one point or another include Seth Gordon, Travis Knight, Shawn Levy, Dan Trachtenberg, and even Oscar winner David O. Russell. There have also been a number of actors circling the role of Drake, including Mark Wahlberg before he took on the role of Sully.

While the Uncharted games have always had a very cinematic, action movie feel, there was always some concern that a movie adaptation would just seem pointless. Judging by the first trailer, the movie has done a pretty decent job of mirroring the style of the games. While that is likely to please a lot of fans, the character dynamics may not be as popular. A prequel story for the first Uncharted movie feels like an odd choice and young Nathan Drake just doesn't seem like the hero most fans know from the games. Holland is a very charismatic and engaging star, but it does seem like he is too young for this part. However, given what he has done to make Spider-Man his own and with the big scale adventure the trailer promises, Uncharted could end up being worth the long wait.

Uncharted will hit theaters on February 18, 2022.
