Since it was released earlier this month, the anticipated live-action adaptation of the Uncharted video game series has become one of the highest-grossing films of 2022. Although nothing has yet been announced, director Ruben Fleischer is already hoping for a sequel sometime in the future.

Uncharted follows a young adventurer and treasure hunter named Nathan Drake (Tom Holland), who gets recruited by Victor "Sully" Sullivan (Mark Wahlberg) to recover the lost treasure that Ferdinand Magellan amassed during the Magellan expedition. However, our hero and his soon-to-be mentor are not the only ones after the loot: corrupt billionaire Santiago Moncada (Antonio Banderas) and his hired assassin (Tati Gabrielle) also want to get their hands on the treasure, and they're not afraid to get rid of whoever gets in their way.

During an appearance on Deadline's Hero Nation podcast, Fleischer, who previously directed Zombieland and its 2019 sequel, as well as 2018's Venom, revealed that he would like to return to the director's chair for a follow-up to Uncharted. "I can’t help but hope we’ll be doing a sequel," he said. "I think Sony is appropriately superstitious, and they don’t plan things without knowing how they’ll be received."

Uncharted first debuted internationally before appearing in domestic theaters on February 18, likely to avoid any Super Bowl-related distractions. Although Uncharted received mixed reviews (the film currently scores 40% on Rotten Tomatoes), it performed well at the box office and garnered around $139 million worldwide in addition to its local proceeds. Therefore, it wouldn't come as a surprise if Sony decided to give a sequel the green light.

Another one of this year's highest-grossing films that is getting another chapter after a successful run at the box office is Scream, which was released in January. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Spyglass and Paramount approved another installment to the beloved Scream franchise and production will start this summer. The slasher, a direct sequel to 2011's Scream 4, opened to $62.6 million in domestic earnings and $106.7 million internationally.

Meanwhile, fans can see more of Nathan Drake in Fortnite, as the popular free-to-play battle royale title recently released its Uncharted cosmetics. Players are now able to purchase the Nathan Drake and Chloe Frazer outfits, which include both the film and video game appearances. In addition, some accessories like the Second Hand Saber Pickaxe, Parashurama Axe Pickaxe, and the Update Journal Emote are also available.

Uncharted is currently playing in theaters.
