For years, the Uncharted movie has struggled to get off the ground. Mark Wahlberg was attached to star as treasure hunter Nathan Drake for about five years, but once director Shawn Levy came aboard the project, he decided to go with a younger actor, opting to cast Spider-Man: Homecoming's Tom Holland in the lead role instead. Very few details have been revealed about the film since the unconfirmed reports of Holland's casting, but the star recently teased his involvement using social media.

In a since-deleted post on Instagram, the supposed Nathan Drake actor posted a short video of himself playing Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection. The clip is accompanied with the caption "for research purposes," indicating that Holland is playing through the Uncharted series to prepare himself for the role of Nathan Drake.

At the time of this writing, it's unclear why Holland decided to delete the Instagram post, but a likely explanation is that Sony told him to take it down. This is somewhat surprising as Holland's casting in the film isn't exactly a secret, and was revealed six months ago, along with plot details suggesting the film would be a prequel to the video game series.

Spider-Man: Homecoming Star Tom Holland Cast as Nathan Drake

Even though Tom Holland's casting was revealed six months ago, Sony has yet to make a formal announcement, which may be why Holland had to take the video down. It's possible that even more changes will be made to the Uncharted movie, and maybe Sony doesn't want to get ahead of itself by revealing too much about the long-gestating project too soon.

So, when will we learn more of the Uncharted movie in an official capacity? Well, that's hard to say. Tom Holland is a rising star in Hollywood, and his role as Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe will see him appear in a number of films over the next few years, including Avengers: Infinity War and a sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming. The young actor is plenty busy these days, and it remains to be seen when he will find the time to star as Nathan Drake in the Uncharted movie.

However, Sony won't want to wait too long before finally filming the Uncharted movie. Now that Naughty Dog is done with Uncharted for at least awhile, Sony would like to keep the franchise fresh in the minds of fans by releasing the long-awaited film adaptation, and so it may try to get the ball rolling on it sooner rather than later.

The Uncharted movie doesn't have a release date.
