The Uncharted movie has been in development hell for years, but it looks like it's finally moving forward. Set to start filming in about a month's time, the Uncharted movie has confirmed more cast members and has settled on a new director.

As reported by Variety, the Uncharted movie has cast Antonio Banderas in an unknown role. Sophia Ati and Tati Gabrielle have also reportedly joined the cast, though their characters also have yet to be announced. With Mark Wahlberg playing Sully and Tom Holland playing Nathan Drake, speculation points to Banderas playing the role of the Uncharted movie's villain, though that has not been confirmed.

Variety has also revealed the new Uncharted movie director. A number of directors have been attached to the Uncharted movie over the years, but the film has settled on Ruben Fleischer, known for directing Zombieland and its sequel, as well as the financially successful Venom movie. Fleischer is replacing Bumblebee director Travis Knight, who had to drop out of the project due to scheduling conflicts with Tom Holland's Marvel Cinematic Universe obligations.

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune

It was previously reported in January that Fleischer was Sony's top choice for Uncharted movie director after Knight dropped out, so it's not too surprising to learn that he will in fact be working on the film.

Now that the Uncharted movie has a director, more cast members, and is set to start filming soon, more information on it should start coming to light. As it stands, all we know about the Uncharted movie from a plot standpoint is that it will be a prequel to the Naughty Dog games, and that it will take inspiration from Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. Further plot details are unavailable, though fans shouldn't expect a direct adaptation of any of the game plot lines.

In the meantime, it will be interesting to see if the Uncharted movie is able to keep the video game movie adaptation momentum going strong. Video game movies were once written off completely, but the success of films like Detective Pikachu and Sonic the Hedgehog has shown that quality video game adaptations are possible. Considering how cinematic the Uncharted video games already are, it seems like it should be even easier to adapt to the big screen, but fans will have to wait for its 2021 premiere to find out for sure.

Uncharted will premiere in theaters on March 5, 2021.
