Copies of the highly anticipated PlayStation 4 exclusive Uncharted 4 are being sold by retailers weeks ahead of the scheduled released date of May 10.
Reports of Uncharted 4 copies being sold or shipped early are coming in from all directions. Retailers in the UK are stocking copies on their shelves, while both the UK and US branches of Amazon have begun to ship pre-orders, much to the shock and delight of gamers anxious to play.
The Uncharted series is developer Naughty Dog’s bread and butter. While they have had tremendous success with many of their other titles, Uncharted remains their flagship series, and for good reason. It’s not only critically acclaimed, but also incredible lucrative; the last chapter in the series sold 3.8 million copies on the first day.
Money, however, never seems to be Naughty Dog’s strongest motivator. The company is meticulous with their games, taking special care to release a product that feels closest to their high standards of perfection. Because of this reputation, worldwide demand for Uncharted 4 has exceeded what is available and last month the studio announced on the official PlayStation blog that they would be pushing the release date by two weeks to allow for extra manufacturing time. But it appears that some retailers did not get that memo.
Exactly two weeks before the new release date, and, ironically, the day Uncharted 4’s final gameplay trailer dropped, UK retailers have already begun stocking their shelves with copies of the game. In an incident reported by VideoGamer, one lucky UK man walked into a CEX store hoping to buy a camera lens and walked out with an early copy of Uncharted 4.
According to the site’s source, multiplayer is not yet available and trophies are not syncing with PlayStation servers, which doesn’t come as a surprise. Others are reporting that Amazon has begun shipping copies to those that pre-ordered and folks on Twitter have not been shy about sharing the news.
Those who are able to snag an early copy should enjoy this stroke of serendipity, but they should also be conscious of spoilers for the majority of others who were not so fortunate. As if the tagline was not already an indication, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is Naughty Dog’s last title in the series, so some big events are expected to take place.
It appears that Naughty Dog will have their hands full dealing with this issue, while Amazon and other retailers are likely in the midst of penning their apology letters. Meanwhile, a portion of lucky gamers are currently taking Nathan Drake on one last epic adventure.
Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End releases May 10, 2016 for PS4.
