Nathan Drake Brother Uncharted 4

Despite high marks for storytelling, visuals, and gameplay, the Uncharted series has never been one to deviate too far from its established formula. Moreover, fans have come to adore Nathan Drake's adventures over the course of Naughty Dog's three PS3 releases and they hope the final games, A Thief's End, will be no different.

Therefore it should come as no surprise that Uncharted 4 will feature competitive multiplayer, a mainstay facet of the franchise since Uncharted 2. Fans can expect that Naughty Dog won't simply copy-and-paste the multiplayer from past games into this PS4 releases, but as of yet all we know is that multiplayer will play a part.

Word of multiplayer comes by way of Game Informer, whose cover story focuses on Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. It's in that feature that we also learn a little more about the story in Uncharted 4, which thus far has been a mystery.

According to GI (via Gematsu), Uncharted 4 will see Nathan reuniting with his brother Sam, who he originally thought had died. It turns out that the elder Drake is very much alive, and the two brothers head off on an adventure that includes exploring an island created by pirates and facing off with two rival explorers.

Since Sam is part of the Uncharted 4 story, he will also factor into the gameplay as an AI companion. The Uncharted franchise is obviously no stranger to AI companions, but in most cases they don't do much. In Uncharted 4, however, Sam will apparently be a competent companion a la Ellie in The Last of Us.

Unfortunately, although Sam is along for the ride as an AI companion he cannot be controlled by a second player...or at least that's not what Game Informer's preview revealed. Uncharted has been a mostly single player experience so that decision makes sense, but it would have been cool to play this final game with a buddy.

That's apparently where the multiplayer will come into play, allowing gamers an opportunity to duke it out with their friends. Some gamers really enjoy the Uncharted multiplayer, so it's great to see it make a return and it will be interesting to see how Naughty Dog has improved it in the current-gen.

The same goes for Uncharted 4 as a whole, which ranks very high on our most anticipated games of 2015 list. This is the last game in Sony's flagship franchise, so we hope that Naughty Dog can pull out all the stops for fans.

Are you glad to hear multiplayer is returning for Uncharted 4? What do you think of Sam as an AI companion?

Uncharted 4: A Thief's End releases later this year on PS4.
