Ever since the release of Uncharted 4 and its spin-off Uncharted: The Lost Legacy it is widely believed that the series has come to an end. Now, the former director of the series looks back on her time at Naughty Dog and shares her original vision for Uncharted 4.

Originally Uncharted series director Amy Hennig was in charge of developing Uncharted 4, but after some internal changes, Hennig left the studio and The Last of Us directors Bruce Straley and Neil Druckmann were put on the project. Hennig explained that while the game didn't change as much when it changed hands, a few differences were applied to the final version.

In an interview at DICE 2019, Hennig revealed that the character of Nadine Ross, who was first introduced in Uncharted 4, was not included in the original concept of the game. Given Nadine Ross' role in Uncharted 4 and eventually in The Lost Legacy, it is interesting to think about what direction the series could have gone without the character.

The former director also revealed that the flashback sequence in the game showcasing the adventure of a young Nathan Drake and his brother Sam were also not included in the original concept. However, the most significant deviation from Hennig's vision revolved around the character of Sam.

Hennig said that she had a different idea in mind as to how Sam was supposed to be introduced in the game. In Hennig's original vision, Sam would serve as an "antagonistic force in Drake's life that he then had to reconcile." Of course, Sam also had an antagonistic element as the story of Uncharted 4 went on, but Hennig's initial plan was for him to be the bad guy at the beginning that will eventually lead to "reconciliation and reunification" by the end of the game.

Despite the change in developers with Hennig's eventual departure from Naughty Dog, the former series director reassured fans that Uncharted 4's "DNA and core story were all there." As of now, it remains unclear on whether Naughty Dog plans to introduce another game to the Uncharted franchise. However, a recent job listing seems to suggest that the studio might be up to something that is related to Uncharted.

Uncharted 4: A Thief's End is available now for the PlayStation 4.
