'Uncharted 3' Wins Video Game Writing Award at the 2012 WGA's

Uncharted 3 Wins At WGAs

If there's one thing the Uncharted games are known for, it's their snappy dialogue and clever writing. The Writer's Guild of America recognized this as well, giving Uncharted 3 the Video Game Writing Award.

Uncharted 3 had some tough competition, as the other nominees included Batman: Arkham City and Assassin's Creed Revelations. Rounding off the nominees were... Brink and Mortal Kombat, hardly the most story driven of games.

If you're wondering why Brink and Mortal Kombat are up there, it's because in order to actually be nominated for a WGA, one must be a member of the organization. That pretty much explains why Brink - a multiplayer centric shooter - is nominated, and not say L.A. Noire or Dead Space 2.

Not that Uncharted 3 doesn't deserve the award, but we should point out that each year there is much repetition amongst the nominated IP's. The Assassin's Creed titles are pretty much always nominated, with Brotherhood winning in 2010. Uncharted 3 isn't the first title in the series to win or be nominated for the award either, with Uncharted 2 also being recognized for its writing. Many of these games do have great writing, but it'd be nice if we could see more variety in the nominees and their publishers.

It's also worth pointing out that at one point, Dangerous High School Girls In Trouble was a nominee. Yes, that's a game.

We thought Uncharted 3 was pretty spectacular, and we're not the only ones, considering its 92 Metacritic average. The game had, arguably, the best story out of the series so far and focused on Drake's psyche as well as his relationship with other characters - as opposed to just another treasure hunting adventure. It offered a genuiney mature story. It's nice to see the Writer's Guild was able to recognize it too.

It's pretty unfortunate that Bethesda didn't try to get Skyrim nominated instead of Brink, then we could have filled this post with so many "arrow to the knee" jokes. Maybe they wanted to... but then Bethesda took an arrow - never mind.
