Nathan Drake may have to go spelunking for treasure, but it seems Naughty Dog is a bit more fortunate. Sony has announced that their critically acclaimed Action/Adventure game Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception has sold almost 4 million units on its first day at retail.

Uncharted 3 sold roughly 3.8 million units at launch, a number which is sure to grow as the days pass on. The franchise has certainly been a successful one for Sony, as prior to the game's launch they announced that the franchise has sold over 6 million units. This would bring the total numbers sold to 9.8 million copies! Sure, maybe that's not enough as Black Ops' 15 million copies sold this year, but it's still a remarkable feat for any game, especially a console exclusive.

2009's Uncharted 2 took a handful of months to cross the 3 million mark and considering Uncharted 3 did this in just a single day and we should probably expect Uncharted 4 is on the way, likely for the PlayStation 4.

For comparison's sake, Gears of War 3, which was also one of the most anticipated titles this year sold 3 million copies in its first week at retail. These numbers obviously do not reflect the quality of either game, but for a franchise such as Uncharted to outsell the juggernaut that is Gears of War, well let's just say someone at Sony/Naughty Dog had to be doing something right.

Uncharted 3 Financial Success

Hopefully these numbers also make up for the rather abysmal sales of Resistance 3. Insomniac's shooter only sold 180 000 copies in its first month at North American retailers, a disappoint for all parties involved, especially considering how good it is.

Naughty Dog is said to be working on an aiming patch to fix the issues players are experiencing with the gunplay in Uncharted 3, while we loved the game, some players feel that Naughty Dog made too many tweaks to the shooting, causing plenty of frustration in the Uncharted community. Couple that constant support with the DLC coming down the line - and that is already available - and Uncharted 3 is a money maker.
