Uncharted's protagonist spent the first game exploring mostly lush jungles and the second game in the snow covered mountains of the Himalayas. It would seem only appropriate that Drake venture through a completely new locale in Uncharted 3. Rumor has it that this new locale might venture deep in the arid desert.

Working off a reliable source, Kotaku believes that not only would the game involve a desert location, but also that Sony plans to announce this news at the upcoming VGAs. It seems like every day another exciting announcement is added to the growing VGA list.

Beyond its change of pace, the desert location is the perfect venue in which to place a long hidden treasure. With pyramids and tombs galore, the possibilities are endless as to where Drake and his team could end up by the end of the game.

One element of the desert that might not be suitable for an Uncharted game is its lack of freestanding structures. The parkour style of traversal that has made Uncharted so famous would have to be traded for perhaps some more intense action moments similar to the train sequence in Among Thieves.

Fans of the Uncharted property will find this news to be much more comforting than the recent developments with David O’Russell’s movie, namely the casting of Mark Wahlberg as Nathan Drake. No matter how the film ends up performing, gamers can expect a solid title from the team Naughty Dog.

With a PS3 exclusive announcement and the Spike VGAs early next month, Sony has a few opportunities to either substantiate or put to bed this rumor. It goes without saying that no matter where the title ventures to, gamers want a sequel to 2009’s Game of the Year ASAP.  Stick to Game Rant for a full write up on the announcement whenever it occurs.

Do you see a desert location as being perfect for Uncharted 3, or is there another untapped resource that would be better suited for the gameplay mechanics?
