When it comes to what's being watched on television, there's no bigger name than Nielsen. Since the 1950's, Nielsen has been the most important source of viewership info for the TV industry, and has had a massive influence on what television is, and isn't. Now, as the medium changes and takes new forms, Nielsen has added, for the first time ever, a roundup of streaming viewership to its weekly data reports.

While the information only includes Amazon and Netflix at the moment, the statistics indicate that Netflix is far ahead of the competition, with shows on the service topping the overall viewership charts. The Umbrella Academy, a Netflix original, topped the charts for August 3 to August 9, followed up by Shameless, which just had a new season added to the Netflix library. Most of the chart however is comprised of acquired shows, like The Office and Dexter.

Despite the high viewership numbers for acquired content, original programming still does better numbers than acquired overall. Netflix has reiterated that they see better results and investment from original films and shows. Most streaming executives also seem to agree that original content is the best driver of more subscription sales, not repackaged shows. In general, most services use original content to entice sales and promote immediate engagement, while building a robust library is useful for long-term user retention.

Of course Netflix's dominance is unsurprising; the service is one of the most recognizable and longest-lived of contemporary streaming, though competitors like Disney+ and Hulu may not be far behind. Nielsen does not currently track statistics for these services as of yet, so analysts have to make do with the figures reported by the companies themselves for the most part. Considering Netflix has taken every single spot in the most recently reported top ten, it's safe to say they're doing alright for themselves, at least compared to Amazon. More accurate figures will have to be seen if and when Nielsen manages to start reporting figures for other major players in the field Like Disney, HBO Max, and Quibi (heh).
