The first trailer for The Umbrella Academy season 3 i finally here. The brand-new look was released by Netflix on May 19, a little over a month before the release of the highly-anticipated third season of the series, which debuts on the streaming platform in late June.

In case you don't remember, season 2 ended with the Umbrella Academyplayed by Elliot Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, and Aidan Gallagher— returning home after preventing the end of the world in 1963 by using Number Five's (Gallagher) time-hopping power. However, the gang soon realizes that they've landed in an alternate timeline where the Umbrella Academy never existed and are greeted by other crime fighters: The Sparrow Academy.

Unsurprisingly, the trailer shows the Umbrella Academy clashing with the Sparrow Academy, who are led by a living yet less-than-friendly alternate version of their own Number Six, Ben Hargreeves (Justin H. Min). Not only that but hopping through timelines has created, in the words of Five, "a time paradox" that could potentially destroy all existence in a matter of five days. Added to the Umbrella Academy's grievances is an unidentified entity wreaking havoc into reality, which may —or may not— have been caused by the original Hargreeves' interdimensional travel.

In addition to forcing the group to team up with the Sparrow Academy to fix the time paradox that their arrival caused, season 3 will showcase the transition of Page's character. The actor came out as transgender in December 2020, and Netflix immediately updated his credits to reflect Page's proper pronouns. The Umbrella Academy team also voiced their support and revealed that they had been working behind the scenes with Page to ensure some well-needed trans representation. Page later took to social media to announce that his character, previously called Vanya, would be known as Viktor Hargreeves from that point forward.

The forthcoming season will also introduce the cast of the Sparrow Academy, which was officially announced in January 2021. The Umbrella Academy's alternate-timeline counterparts will include Justin Cornwell as Marcus/Number 1, Britne Oldford as Fei, Jake Epstein as Alphonso/Number Four, Genesis Rodriguez as Sloane, and Cazzie David as Jamie. Joining the human actors is an "existential dread-inducing psykronium cube," also known as Number Seven or simply Christopher, a VFX character.

Based on a comic book by My Chemical Romance's Gerard Way, The Umbrella Academy became one of Netflix's most successful series upon its release in 2019. The last time that fans saw the beloved characters was in 2020, so season 3 has been a long time coming. While the show has deviated from its source material, the themes of time travel and alternate realities add much more excitement to the already-anticipated season.

The Umbrella Academy season 3 arrives on Netflix on June 22, 2022.
