This mysterious piece of artwork that showed up on ubiworkshop.com has led to an awful lot of speculation as to what it could possibly mean. Is it the new AAA project that Ubisoft Toronto is working on? Perhaps, but like many others, we’re going to give our thoughts on what it could be.
As a side note, Ubisoft did tweet that this is not Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood, so we can immediately rule that out. Not that anyone would have thought as much, considering we already know that Brotherhood will be taking place in Rome.
Well, let’s take the guy first. Clearly he’s quite the bad-ass, with a severed head in one hand and what seems to be a bloody knife-like weapon in the other (Older version of the hidden Blade?). Also, if the pyramids in the background didn’t give you a hint, it’s also quite apparent that he’s Egyptian, which would lead one to deduce further that the setting of this game will be Egypt.
Ok, I’m just going to say it. This really does look like its going to be Assassins Creed 3. I say this because he looks rather assassin like, the belt is very much like Altair’s (with the throwing knives and all), and of course the “AC” letters above the pyramid.
The other damning evidence that this is AC3 is the fact that the image is called “Assassin by Gabz.” Now, I’m not saying it’s definitely AC3, but the signs are all pointing that way. The only thing that makes me question it is that the tell tale assassin’s symbol is missing…. which is curious.
Ok, so let’s delve a little deeper. A large red (or orange) moon is often referred to as the “harvest moon,” which usually means that it’s time for farmers to harvest their crops, but has also been used to symbolize civil war. Civil war is certainly something ancient Egypt is no stranger to.
If you didn’t already know, the last two protagonists of the Assassin’s Creed series have had names derived from birds of prey. The Eagle would suggest that the theme will continue with Akhom (Eagle in Egyptian) as a possibility for this shadowy man. The grungy boarder around the bottom is full of symbols, circle and arrows, much like the chaotic symbols of the Assassin’s Creed series, so maybe this is another clue.
Alright, maybe I’m getting ahead of myself here and this has actually nothing to do with Assassin’s Creed at all. Maybe he’s the lead for a totally new IP. Hey, Egypt would be an excellent setting for any game, especially one of the open world variety.
To be totally honest, we don’t even know if it’s a game at all. Some have said it could be a comic based on the Assassin’s Creed series, or perhaps even just some guy’s fan art from Deviant Art. All I know is that Ubisoft had better reveal all at E3!
Speaking of E3, be sure to check back for our coverage of the event! It’s going to be awesome.
What do you guys think? Is it Assassin’s Creed 3, or some portable tie-in game? Let us know what you think it could mean.
