Ubisoft’s Gamescom announcements reveal more details on its upcoming open world winter sports game Steep, including a release date before 2016 is over.

While Ubisoft’s most vocal critics have often stated that the publisher can become too complacent in its already established formulas, the company’s E3 2016 presentation this year went a long way in refuting that notion. In a conference that included both Watch Dogs 2 and Ghost Recon: Wildlands, however, it was the brand new Steep that was the most innovative and intriguing Ubisoft title once the week-long gaming odyssey had finally ended.

Steep‘s open world winter sports gameplay was something entirely unlike anything gamers had seen before, and although news about the game has been scarce in recent months, the title remains at the forefront of most anticipated future releases for many fans of sports gaming. Steep‘s release date might be sooner than many had expected, however, as Ubisoft revealed during their Gamescom presentation earlier today that gamers can expect to be paragliding down the Alps just in time for winter. Steep will be available on December 2, 2016, and Ubisoft provided a new trailer to help demonstrate the myriad number of ways fans can explore the publisher’s new winter sports wonderland.

The video details some more of the enticing gameplay Steep‘s E3 2016 reveal initially wowed audiences with, primarily focusing on the game’s breadth of options once players hit the slopes. Ubisoft has also made Steep‘s multiplayer modes a priority when showcasing gameplay footage, and it’s likely that there will be more to come from the publisher about co-op given that an online connection is mandatory for those wishing to explore the beautifully rendered mountains that have become synonymous with the title.

Of course, while Steep was certainly one of the primary focal points of Ubisoft’s Gamescom presence, there were enough other titles present that the publisher did not divulge much new information about the winter sports game beyond its swiftly-approaching release date. That Steep was one of the bigger presences during the presentation speaks volumes about Ubisoft’s confidence in the game, however, as the publisher’s upcoming games line-up is exceptionally strong and includes games like South Park: The Fractured But Whole.

Whether or not Ubisoft’s confidence in Steep is well-founded, though, remains to be seen. Luckily for fans of sports titles looking for something a little more fresh, the wait until the gaming world finds out whether Steep delivers on its promise is just a few months away.
