For anyone's who has played one of Ubisoft's games, they've probably noticed whenever an achievement or trophy is unlocked, they also earn what are called Club Units. Club Units are a form of currency used both internally across all Ubisoft games, from Far Cry to Assassin's Creed, and by making purchases from the Ubisoft store.
Units earned by players up until now have always been accessible regardless of when they were rewarded, meaning units earned all the way back in 2009 from playing Assassin's Creed II could be redeemed to purchase an in-game armor set in Assassin's Creed Odyssey, without having to spend any real money. Coming early 2019 however, Ubisoft will be changing how long players have to use their respective units.
Starting April 1st, 2019, Club Units will only exist in a player's digital wallet for up to two years. After that, units will disappear from their available funds. When the change goes live on the scheduled date, the first points to fall off for players will be those rewarded before March 31st, 2017. As would be expected, the oldest points in a player's wallet will fall off first when making purchases, allowing the best chance of preventing units being wasted.
Putting a time limit to spend club units could be seen as a way for Ubisoft to keep players invested in its titles months after they've released. With live service games such as Rainbow Six Siege, the upcoming launch of The Division 2, and the push to support Assassin's Creed Odyssey with a steady flow of new content for the next couple of years, Ubisoft looks to be making these changes with the long-term investment of players in mind. Those who begin to wane off any Ubisoft titles could fall into the trap of forgetting to spend units on any digital goodies they may want, thus adding a small incentive to return to a respective game.
What's good to see is that Ubisoft is getting ahead of the game with its new Club rewards layout. During this time, which the studio is calling a transition period, no one will see any of their units disappear. Those who've banked a ton of units either by choice or simply neglecting the Ubisoft store should jump in and pick up whatever in-game weapons or outfits they want, absent of any "play-to-win" purchasing options, or even get a nice discount on something from the company's online store just in time for the holidays.
