Awesome! I’m taking that trailer, and it’s slavish attention to recreating the original game, as conformation of an important fact: namely, that Ubisoft understands that the first Driver is the only good Driver.
The importance of that point can not be overstated. Every other game in the series has been at best a disappointment, and at worst, a tragedy. The legacy of subpar (and outright awful) sequels to Driver has robbed a brilliant game of its rightful place in history. Those of you with long memories will know what I’m refering to.
Driver’s mission based structure, gritty crime-world story, and open world design largely prefigured Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto 3. I would go so far as to say that, had there not been a Driver, there may not have been a GTA3. The cruel irony is, Driver has spent the intervening years playing catch-up (poorly) to a game it inspired.
So, dare we hope this latest entry in the Driver series finally lives up to the quality of the first game? I’m cautiously optimistic. The release of this teaser trailer a week before the reveal of the full game shows, if nothing else, that Ubisoft has some confidence in the title. The publisher’s track-record with its major franchises (Assassin’s Creed, Ghost Recon, Splinter Cell) is solid. If Ubi has put as much work into Driver as it has those other games, we might really have something.
Ubisoft is gearing up to deliver all the details on Driver during their E3 press conference on Monday, June 14. Ranters, are you ready to give Driver another chance? What do you think of the teaser trailer?
