Ubisoft CEO Comments On Potential Splinter Cell Return

ghost recon splinter cell date

There was once a time when Sam Fisher helped define an entire genre of games in the Splinter Cell franchise. However, the character seems to appear less and less these days, being reduced to a mere cameo or easter egg in games like Ghost Recon: Wildlands, which recently saw the character appear in an in-game event. Many fans were disappointed that Fisher didn't appear at this year's E3 conference, especially after rumors of a new game circulated online. Things seemed dim for the character, but now Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has commented on the possibility of a comeback for the stealthy hero.

Speaking in an interview about the future of Ubisoft and the games industry, Guillemot gave out a little information about the future of the character.

So I will disappoint you because I don't have an answer to give you exactly, but each brand we have, and each character, we want them to live in the long-term, so one day you will see something, but I can't give you more details.

It isn't much, but at least fans can rest easy knowing that Fisher will someday return to consoles. He's been missing, or hiding, since 2013's Splinter Cell: BlacklistThe five-year gap is already sizeable, and it certainly doesn't seem like Ubisoft has anything in the works for the character anytime soon. It isn't too much of a stretch to imagine at least another five years without the green eyes of doom silently working their way across TV screens.

Guillemot's comments should give fans at least a glimmer of hope for the character, but Ubisoft's failure to acknowledge Fisher in any meaningful way is frustrating. There's a sizeable hole in the stealth game market right now, mostly due to Konami's treatment of the Metal Gear franchise, and Sam Fisher could easily close the gap with a brand-new Splinter Cell game. Even a remaster or collection of the first few games would be enough to tide fans over for a little while. Either way, fans will just have to be patient and hope that the character does make a return someday. And if he doesn't make it into his own game, maybe Smash Brothers Ultimate could use a Solid Snake echo character?
