Assassin's Creed Odyssey has finally released, and fans should be enjoying everything that the new open-world game has to offer. Unfortunately, though, Ubisoft's servers have been hit with several DDoS attacks, meaning that players of the new game are having to face frustrating connection issues.

On the Ubisoft Support Twitter account, the company confirmed that it had been experiencing a "series of DDoS attacks" and that these were causing latency (lag) or connection issues with several of its games. As previously mentioned, one such game to be affected is Assassin's Creed Odyssey, meaning that if players have faced connection issues with the game's social features or its online stores, then this is likely why.

At 2:45PM EST, Ubisoft did confirm that it had "resolved" the issues regarding the DDoS attacks. However, the company also noted that "some users are still experiencing connectivity issues." In a forum post, Ubi-Town, a member of the Ubisoft Support team, said that they appreciated the patience of players and that it is still working on resolving the lingering problems.

Ubisoft games were not the only ones impacted by the DDoS attacks. Square Enix MMO Final Fantasy 14, was also affected by them. An update to the game's official website confirmed that FF14 is experiencing "technical difficulties" and that players should expect disconnections as well as difficulty accessing, sending, and receiving data. The situation is being investigated, and "countermeasures" are being deployed, but according to social media, players were still facing spotty connections and were being logged out of the game as of half an hour ago.

A DDoS attack is designed to overwhelm a server with so many requests that the server just buckles under the weight. They are often carried out maliciously, and unfortunately seem to be deployed during times in which people will most want to use the servers. Many will likely remember the infamous Christmas Day DDoS attacks which brought down both Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network in 2014.

Ubisoft itself recognizes that these sorts of attacks are a regular occurrence. In the forum post, Ubi-Town writes that DDoS attacks are "are a common occurrence for almost all online service providers." As frustrating as the connection issues are, it's at least positive that the Ubisoft and Square Enix's teams are already on the case. Hopefully, connections will return to normal soon.
