As 2018 is coming to a close many companies are revealing their "top tens" for the year, such as Google's most searched for games in 2018. Twitter is also revealing which topics people tweeted about the most this year, from a variety of topics including video games.

Fans will not be surprised to know that it is Epic Games’ popular battle royale game, Fortnite, that takes the crown for most tweeted about video game in 2018, but there are a few surprises as well.

  1. Fortnite
  2. Call of Duty
  3. Overwatch
  4. Pokémon
  5. EA Sports Madden NFL
  6. NBA 2K
  7. Super Mario
  8. Super Smash Brothers
  9. Splatoon
  10. Grand Theft Auto

While Fortnite grew exponentially in 2018, boasting over 200 million registered players and 8.3 million concurrent players, Nintendo games were a popular topic of discussion as well. Almost half of the games listed in the top ten are from Nintendo, including Pokemon, Super Mario, Super Smash Brothers, and Splatoon. This is also not a big surprise, as there have been various Pokemon games released in 2018, including the first Pokemon game for the Nintendo Switch console. Super Smash Brothers Ultimate has also taken the world by storm this year, and has been talked about a lot since its highly anticipated reveal.

It is surprising that Overwatch remains a popular topic for gamers, being as high as third on the list, even though the game is almost four years old. It also seems that the release of the latest Call of Duty game was a big event for many people this year, as it also made the top three on the list of most downloaded PlayStation games for 2018.

It is surprising to see that God of War is not on this list, even though it was one of the most anticipated games of the year, and even won Game of the Year award at this year's Game Awards. Fans might also have expected to see Marvel's Spider-Man on the list, as many were eagerly awaiting its release too.

While next year doesn't have too many major titles set in stone, there are plenty of major releases targeting 2019. No doubt Kingdom Hearts 3 will be a popular topic on social media and games like Anthem and The Division 2 should have their fair share of discussions.
