The challenge was based around the popular 1990s TV show Gladiators. While the pit was supposed to be deep, it was more of a thin layer of foam cubes scattered over something like an inflatable pool. Adriana Chechik, a popular streamer with 802,000 followers, took part in the challenge. Upon hitting the ground, Chechik broke her back in 2 places, an injury that required surgery and the insertion of metal support rods to correct.

Chechik wasn't the only streamer injured. LochVVaness both dislocated her knee, and sprained an ankle while stepping off the podium following a Face-Off victory. She later complained of back pain and had difficulty walking. Throughout the event, contestants were warned against diving into the pit, with a Lenovo commentator stating that every effort had been taken to ensure the pit was safe. Eventually the pit was closed, with the hope of bringing an end to the injuries. The foam pit debacle is just the latest Twitch controversy from this year.

Additionally, another streamer was injured at San Diego TwitchCon. While unrelated to the foam pit, streamer Zummers broke her ankle after jumping over a chair.
