While Twitch can be a place of people purely enjoying streams and their favorite content creators, by now the platform is known to contain more than just wholesome content. Unfortunately, for many viewers and streamers, Twitch can be quite toxic. Whether other streamers are enacting hate raids on popular creators or fans are trolling to the point where a streamer loses their social media account, there are multiple ways in which the public personalities of Twitch face hate.
Former Overwatch pro player and incredibly popular Twitch streamer xQc is no stranger to the toxicity of the platform. Over his lengthy streaming career xQc has faced multiple bans from Twitch, though now he is seeing a huge amount of death threats sent his way due to his interaction with r/place, a current project by social media platform Reddit that allows users to place one tile on an expansive online board, leading to communities banding together in order to create some interesting pixel art.
Twitch streamers had notably been battling for space on r/place since it launched on April 1. With only a limited amount of space to fill, some communities are seeing their art destroyed over a day, only for it to be rebuilt again by the loyal fans of a given subreddit. The April Fool's Day joke has seen quite a heated response from Reddit users, as they battle for any given space to create pixel art. Streamer communities are building some tributes to their favorite content creators, only for xQc's community to wipe them out.
xQc has been ordering that his fans go onto r/place in order to wipe out pixel art created by other communities. This has included some big projects on the canvas of r/place, notably one piece by fans of My Little Pony. This led to an overwhelming amount of death threats sent towards xQc due to his community's "experiment" in destroying pieces of pixel art on r/place. "I have gotten more death threats in an hour than I have gotten in the past six years combined," the streamer said in a recent clip. He then went on to lambast those who put in vast amounts of effort and time into being angry and sending death threats, stating "imagine if you took this much care and this much action in your life in other things that mattered like making something of yourself rather than participating in cold, angry violence."
This is by no means the first time xQc has received death threats and will likely not be the last. xQc is known for trolling among the Twitch community and getting into some disagreements with fellow streamers. However, it doesn't seem like either the streamer or his community plan to stop destroying art on r/place, which will likely lead to more threats and negativity down the line.
