In 2018, successful Twitch streamer BoxBox founded his own indie studio, BoxBox Studios. While the name is a bit indulgent, fans of BoxBox were hopeful that the new studio would produce a game in line with the strategic experiences he plays on-stream. Now, three years later, BoxBox is ready to show what he's been working on to the world. Chroma Chronicles is an indie multiplayer deckbuilding game that BoxBox says is inspired by Slay the Spire and Teamfight Tactics. The game's Kickstarter is now live and has a goal of $30,000.In Chroma Chronicles, players will choose one of three characters, Luna, Jade, and Klay. Luna is a mage and is represented by the color purple. Jade is a thief and has the color green. Klay is a red warrior. Once a character is selected, players will draft a deck of cards to go on a "Journey" to try and win 5 matches. After each match, players will be able to upgrade and add to their decks so that each round is a new tier of challenge. Once a Journey is complete, players will start over again and draft an entirely new deck.RELATED: Cross Blitz Is a Story-Driven Card Battler for Classic RPG FansWhile Chroma Chronicles may initially sound a lot like a mix of Hearthstone, particularly its Arenas, there are some unique aspects of gameplay that make BoxBox's game stand out. For one, Chroma Chronicles opponents play their cards at the same time. That way, instead of a methodical back and forth, there's an active rock-scissors-paper style of strategy and prediction. There will still be traditional Attacker and Defender rounds, but Chroma Chronicles isn't content to just be another deckbuilder aping Hearthstone's success.

Even though BoxBox is Kickstarting Chroma Chronicles, the plan is to offer the indie game as a free-to-play title funded through microtransactions. The base game, tentatively planned to launch in early access in May, will feature 3 playable classes, 3 game modes (Solo, Ranked, and Custom), more than 50 cards, collectible emotes, and premium character skins and other cosmetics.

Those wanting to financially support Chroma Chronicles can do so with pledges of $10 or more. The $10 pledge will include a closed beta key for Steam, while pricier pledges will include "BoxBox currency," cosmetics, a name included in the game's credits, an invitation to an exclusive launch tournament, and more.

The Chroma Chronicles Kickstarter has already drawn around 85% of its goal in pledges, so it's all but certain the goal will be met before the campaign ends on April 13. That's especially true with BoxBox marketing for it on Twitch and social media with the support of friends like Disguised Toast. Gamers can expect to hear more about Chroma Chronicles in the months to come.
