Asmongold, a Twitch streamer who initially found fame through World of Warcraft, has rarely been apologetic about his stances on video games, as well as the industry at large. While his views and opinions may have changed over the years – perhaps most notably Asmongold's take on Final Fantasy 14 – there has been one constant, immutable stance throughout it all: disdain for loot boxes and microtransactions.

Loot boxes have long been a major point of contention in the gaming community. The idea of spending real money for a chance to obtain the item players want has often been compared to gambling – and perhaps rightly so. Needless to say, Asmongold fully shares this view, and no matter which MMO he has played over the course of his Twitch career, the popular streamer always decried the practice.

With the recent announcement of Lost Ark launching for western audiences with a microtransaction model that featured loot boxes, Asmongold weighed in that he would never support microtransactions that dealt with chance, and that he strongly believed any premium cosmetics should be purchasable directly from the store.

The popular Twitch streamer went on to say that they take advantage of people who have gambling disorders and gambling tendencies, as well as shape a mentality of gambling by serving as a gateway drug for the young audience who plays these games. Perhaps the most egregious example of loot boxes in recent video game titles can be found in Madden's Ultimate Team, whose publisher Electronic Arts had a class-action lawsuit filed against the company in 2020.

Asmongold has famously never bought a single World of Warcraft mount or pet from the game's store, nor has he accepted them as gifts from his viewers. He's argued that people who bought store mounts were contributing to the downward spiral that World of Warcraft has undergone. In Asmongold's ideal world, players would never need to purchase cosmetics for real money, and he has tried his utmost to not support any microtransaction model, even during his time in video games such as Fortnite or Call of Duty: Warzone.

Having recently returned to streaming on his main channel following a five-month break after the passing of his mother, Asmongold has assured his fans that he did not quit Final Fantasy 14 and that he was excited to continue his journey through the remaining expansions. He clarified that more Lost Ark and even World of Warcraft content was on the way, as his audience has no doubt missed his famous transmogrification and mount competitions in Azeroth. Regardless of which video game Asmongold decides to call home, his opinion on loot boxes will forever remain ironclad.
