Twitch bans for some of the platform's most popular streamers happen with surprising regularity. That's because many of Twitch's most popular streamers reach those heights through controversial, attention-grabbing content. One such example is Sodapoppin, who was banned in June 2020 for a "sex dungeon" segment set in the game VRChat. At the time, Sodapoppin mocked the ban with a satirical apology video. What goes around comes around, it seems, as Sodapoppin has once again been banned from Twitch (temporarily).
Sodapoppin's ban was confirmed via social media trackers, as well as the updated message available if visiting his channel that reads, "This channel is temporarily unavailable due to a violation of Twitch's Community Guidelines or Terms of Service." As said in the message, the ban is temporary and not permanent. Sodapoppin has yet to clarify the duration of his ban. Non-permanent bans typically range from a single day to thirty days.
As for why Sodapoppin was banned, there's no official reason yet. Twitch does not share specific details about a ban. However, Sodapoppin believes it's due to a recent specific controversial moment. In context, it does seem like the reason for Sodapoppin's ban is obvious. While playing a game named Are You Smarter Than the Crowd? Sodapoppin "painted" a customized face, during which he said specifically "blackface" and created what appeared to be a racist caricature.
Sodapoppin did make a lengthy post on Reddit in response to his ban. In the post, Sodapoppin explains that it wasn't his intent to create a racist caricature and him saying "blackface" was a response to him realizing what his creation may have looked like purely by accident. He describes it as a "harmless mistake," which is why he "just rolled with it." That the situation grew worse from there was an unintended result of "just throwing random makeup on the face."
The Twitch streamer does acknowledge what his drawing appears to be in retrospect, saying that it's "extreme blackface." He attributes it to "being naive." Sodapoppin notably did not apologize and instead believes the situation to be one big accident. In Sodapoppin's words, "I am edgy, but not this edgy."
Twitch appears to believe Sodapoppin, for what it's worth. If the platform believed Sodapoppin had committed an overt act of racism, it's possible that the Twitch streamer would be permanently banned. A temporary ban, which will likely only last a week, acknowledges that it was still a harmful moment that Sodapoppin should never have created, but that he's still someone safe for the platform. Sodapoppin's Twitch audience, for its part, is fine calling the ban a vacation.
