Lately, a good portion of the news that is coming from Twitch is nothing but drama, and today is no different. Twitch is currently under fire on social media for posting a video that showcases how Twitch streamers came together in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. While Twitch’s intentions were good, the video came off as very tone-deaf.

The entire world has banded together following the murder of George Floyd on May 25th. Black Lives Matter protests have popped up in every major city in the United States and allies across the globe have joined in to raise awareness of the unfair treatment of Black people in America. The protests hope to bring change and an end to systemic racism in the United States.

Twitch released a video highlighting streamers who were raising money for the Black Lives Matter movement. However, in doing so, its video consisted of mostly white streamers, including one of Twitch's biggest partners, DrLupo, who is the primary voice heard throughout the video. Once the video was tweeted, Twitch faced major backlash from the streaming communities for missing the mark in supporting Black content creators. Shortly after receiving criticism for its video, Twitch deleted it. Twitter user @2leftjoycons has reuploaded it.

The video Twitch put together ends with, “Support Black Voices. Support Black Creators. Support Black Communities. Support Black Twitch.” While the message was good, Twitch only managed to include two Black streamers in its video. After Twitch deleted the video the company released an apology detailing its intentions but admits that its message wasn’t clear.

Twitch’s video seems to have been haphazardly thrown together. Almost half of the streamers in the video were streaming at the same time and for the same foundation. Alanah Pearce, Jacksepticeye, RubberNinja, and Crankgameplays were all part of a multi-stream raising money together. The four of them did manage to raise over $50,000 for the Minnesota Freedom Fund, but Twitch’s video makes it seem as though they were all separate content creators raising thousands of dollars for different causes on their own. This also means that out of the 10 streamers Twitch included, four of them were from the same stream. Which makes it seem like Twitch didn't dig too deep and was a little lazy putting this video together.

Lately, Twitch has been involved in its fair share of drama. Notably, dealing with streamers reporting abuse across its platform. Twitch also banned popular streamer Dr. Disrespect in late June and still, neither party has weighed in on a reason for why the ban happened.
