The Switch has been around for a few years now, but it's still got a lot of love to give, especially with the new OLED version having recently come out. While the Nintendo hybrid console is more than halfway through its lifecycle, the fact that the system has been improved upon, and it's continuing to have classic games added to its catalog, shows that there are a few more years left in it. On top of that, something else has been added to the system, which will please fans of streaming.

As of right now, Nintendo Switch owners can at last download the Twitch app. The streaming app became available on the console just yesterday. As it stands currently, it can only be used to watch streams. Users won't be able to actually stream themselves from the switch in the same way that PlayStation owners can. Whether there will be an implementation to allow people to stream cannot be said at this moment.

This is perhaps one app that has been long overdue for the Switch. Overall, Nintendo's console does seem to be lacking in services that many other systems take for granted. Services like Netflix are not officially available on the Switch, though allegedly there are workarounds to get access to it. As for Twitch, the app will be familiar to those who have used the streaming platform on other devices before. However, it doesn't seem that users will be able to chat directly into stream channels, instead a QR code when scanned will open up a separate chat box on said user's phone. This could be a better solution than using the Switch's own keyboard, but it does mean having two devices to hand at once.

Twitch pulls in millions of viewers every day, so to finally have an app on the hybrid console is going to be pleasing news to many. It's perhaps a bit of a shame that it's taken this long for it to finally become available, especially as the Switch has been out for four years at this point.

In general, this is a step in the right direction. The Switch is Nintendo's second biggest console, in terms of sales, so it seems like a disservice to not make certain popular apps a part of its roster. There still seems to be a bit of life left in it, so while having Twitch now a part of Switch is great news, it remains to be seen whether this will open up the potential for things like Netflix to be added as well.
