Last year, news leaked that Sony was working to make a Twisted Metal reboot game to coincide with the new Twisted Metal TV series starring Anthony Mackie coming in 2023. At the time, the word was that the Twisted Metal reboot was being developed by Lucid Games, the studio behind the PS5 exclusive car combat game Destruction AllStars. However, the latest report suggests Sony may be handing the reigns of the Twisted Metal reboot game over to a different studio.

VGC has reported that the Twisted Metal reboot is no longer in development at Lucid Games and is now being handled by one of Sony's first-party studios in Europe. VGC's sources didn't specify which of Sony's European studios may be working on the Twisted Metal reboot now, but at least one person believes that Destruction AllStars' poor reviews and general reception could be why Sony decided to make the switch. It should be noted that neither Sony nor Lucid Games has made any announcement about the Twisted Metal reboot, and so fans should take this information with a grain of salt until more official information becomes available.

Destruction AllStars has failed to find an audience since launch, despite having been available as a free PlayStation Plus game for a two month period. It seems that many PlayStation 5 games are more interested in playing other titles than the new IP, casting the future of the car combat game in serious doubt.

Sweet Tooth from Twisted Metal

As for the Twisted Metal reboot, not much is known about what it will entail. Previously, it was rumored that the new Twisted Metal game would be free-to-play, but now that Lucid Games is reportedly no longer behind the wheel, it's unclear what direction it may take. If it's truly aiming for release in 2023 alongside the Twisted Metal TV series, though, one has to imagine that more information will come sooner rather than later.

There are rumors that a new PlayStation event may be happening at some point soon, likely another PlayStation State of Play presentation. PlayStation uses these State of Play presentations to highlight its upcoming game releases, and it stands to reason that the Twisted Metal reboot will be announced at one of them. However, just as Sony hasn't actually confirmed that a new Twisted Metal game is in development, it also hasn't said whether or not it will be hosting a new State of Play anytime soon.

For now, Twisted Metal fans should hang tight and keep their expectations in check.
